on our first camping trip away as a family, weekend before last, the only downer to it was I got stung on the finger by a wasp that had got itself stuck in a privacy screen that I was letting down.

I did remarkably well not to swear though, since my two kids were there and stared in bewliderment at Dad clutching his hand and biting his lip, jumping up and down on some insect that had fallen to the tent floor.

A week on and my hand has now reduced back to normal size, just some soreness left on the actual finger.

Needless to say the wasp wont be doing that again.. by the time I had finished jumping on him he was in several parts and flat as a pancake.

When I used to stay with my grandmother in a fruit growing area (loads of wasps), there was always a jam jar with a small amount of jam but part filled with water hanging outside the kitchen door.  It was interesting counting the bodies but it seemed to work.  Don't know how practical it would be when camping.

the wasp then stung the next item it came across - my arm, and flew off.

I didnt get any revenge

Our caravan was in storage at a farm, while passing one day I popped in to check on it , and saw a few wasps flying round by the fridge outlet, looked closer and saw one crawling into the van, squeezing through the wire mesh behind the louvre grille! I didn't have the van's keys with me, so went back a week later with some bug spray, just in case there might be a few wasps in the van(duh), I opened the door which was next to the rear kitchen area. The fridge was next to the door with a drawer above it, I walked past it into the van, no wasps visible. I casually pulled the drawer handle above the fridge, something was sticking as it wouldn't budge, so I gave it a hearty wrench and it opened 3 inches. I think in retrospect this was not a good idea..... a large cloud of wasps came instantly boiling out of the gap, occupying the space between me and the door - all but the lowest 2 foot of the space anyway!

Anyone watching would have been intrigued by the sight of me emerging from the caravan door, rapidly and horizontally in a goalie's dive , landing on the hardcore on my shoulder and trying to beat away the wasp attached to my eyelid!

I scrambled round, slammed the door of the van and locked it. Then I got the first aid kit from the car and wrapped a bandage around my shin which was bleeding profusely, after its contact with the door frame. By the time I got home I was aching all down my left side from my impact with the ground, I had a nasty swelling on my eyelid from the sting, and an even bigger swelling just above my eye socket where I'd thumped myself attempying to get the wasp!. I staggered indoors, my wife and daughter laughed quite a lot when I explained the reason for my condition!

I didn't return to the van for about two months, when I did I met the farmer, who said he had seen a few wasps round the same vent, so had obtained some strong potion from a professional pest controller friend and squirted it in through the grille. When I opened the van, there were dead wasps everywhere! I managed to open the offending drawer fully and found a  nest filling the entire space, which had been restricting the drawer's opening, and which I had partially ruptured by trying to force it open. I had to spring-clean the entire van, every nook and cranny, and also had to remove the fridge and sweep hundreds of dead wasps out of the cavity behind it.

I think the lesson from this is, if you see wasps going in and out of your van, SPRAY FIRST.

Got back last night from 2 weeks in South Wales - there were plenty of wasps to practice on!!!!!!

Trick with the bat is - don't hit them too hard cos they don't get the full shock, just sneak up behind them and gently fry them.

Takes 2 touches normally to fully kill them, which is great as there is a loud cracking noise and sparks, which means a dead wasp and entertainment too. .

Sad family that we are, we did try to keep score, but teenage son won by a mile.

Ours is the £10 version, called The Executioner, so I don't know what the others are like, but it was brilliant.

having just had a NSE (near sting experience ) on a weekend away, following a stinging the weekend before, I am going to have to get one of those rackets in time for next weekend. It seems this cooler weather has made for some dozey wasps.

I take it they work by holding in a button and are safe things to have around little ones?

Hold in a button and attack!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, ours could give quite a kick (teenage son tried it on himself) and there is a warning on it not to use as a toy, so don't leave it where they could play with it.

But the only thing I've ever bought that works and doesn't in volve chemicals. I always tried the jam jar trick but where do you put it on a site that isn't near someone else? And it also seems to attract wasps to the general area.

Good luck

I have just read that its only the female wasp that stings.

Somehow I can't see myself looking to see if the one buzzing around me has boobs or not before deciding to zap it.
