Yes we like gas lamps too -we have a big lantern attachment for our 907 Campingaz bottle. However, it does get quite hot so it may not be you best choice if you have little uns running about. I am sure others will be along with non-gas recommendations
I also like the wind up torches for general use too - and no worries about running out of batteries!
is there one that is safe and light to use/carry.. i have a Maglite \(and a knackered Petzl but can't afford to replace) but is hassle to read at night.. anyone help?? (i need it v compact as i am a backpacker without a car)..
I found that the rechargable battery ones with a energy efficient tube at a tenner upwards are excellent. Ours has a remote control and can charge off the car.

Then a headlamp would be perfect. Very small & lightweight. I use mine for reading (light shines directly on your book)and for trips to the loo at night (obviously it shines just in front of where you're walking, so you never trip over anyones guyropes). Mine has 3 settings & takes 3 AA batteries & they last ages.
For Kazzi, a 12 volt strip-light powered by a leisure battery. Sorry thats no help to Bren, but I have bought my daughter a cheap lamp from Asda which converts from a lantern to a torch, runs off 2 AAs, and has a hanging loop.
