Finally getting away for the first time this weekend and I'm having a problem with my coleman 424. I've dusted it off and unfortunately have left some fuel in there from last year (which I probably shouldn't have done). I'm not sure I can safely drain the fuel so I guess I have to burn it off and remember not to leave fuel this time. Is that right?

The next thing is that I have tried to light it and it's not going well. I pull the rod out and turn it to open it (but it only turns a little way is that right?) and then I pump 35 times and close it again (with thumb over hole). I hold my match to the burner and turn the black valve, the stove lights and I can hear it clanking quietly into action. Then the flame goes out.

Am I missing something? Is it that there is only a tiny bit of fuel left in it and if I go and get some more and fill the tank up it will be ok? How do I safely leave the tank empty through the winter?

Sounds to me like there isn't enough fuel in it. I'd put some more fuel in it to dilute the older stuff in it and avoid sucking up all of the crud in the bottom of the tank.

I've checked with OH and we never empty ours over the winter.

Put some more fuel in it and I'm sure it'll be fine, no matter how hard you pump you won't get it going properly without enough fuel in it.

Good luck!

Also, yes the rod only turns a smallish distance.   Assuming this is the dual burner (don't know the model numbers!), don't forget to turn up the little "choke" lever for the first minute once you've lit it. Also you need to turn the black knob for at least two turns when you light it.

So I went away this weekend and I couldn't get it to light. I think it might be because I am a girl and I don't have the brute strength to pump the handle with my thumb over it and get it all the way back in without letting all the air back out again. Does this sound familiar to any other women on the forum?

Hi Chris, I'm a girl and I can pump ours BUT it does hurt my thumb!!   The tricky bit I find is getting the rod in the right place for it to work properly.

I'm really frustrated. I went with another friend this weekend who has a campingaz stove so fortunately we didn't go hungry. However, I fancy doing a bit of solo camping next weekend and fear I may starve. Do you think there are any camping shops who might take pity on my and have a look at it? I got it online so can't exactly ask for their help. I'm encouraged that you can do it Piglet. Perhaps I'll have another practice during the week when my dinner doesn't depend on it!

How funny, I'm in Redland, pleased to meet you! . Any ideas of where I can take it to that is around here? Also, as you are local do you know of any tent shows coming up, or of any big camping shops? I'm looking for a new tent but find Millets and the shops in the city centre a bit small and samey.

Hi Chris

If you want to we can make contact and my OH can have a look at it, we can't be very far away from you and he's pretty handy with these things. Can you reply to this post to let me know you're still around and then I'll post my email address for a couple of minutes and then delete it.

Tent display wise we go to Highbridge Camping and Caravans at Highbridge (on the A38 just off the M5) and also to Taunton Camping and Caravans who are just off the A38 (if you stick on the A38 from Highbridge you end up at the Taunton place which is handy!    I think that that Taunton Leisure still have their display at the Garden Centre just as you go into Highbridge so if you take the A38 down from Bristol rather than taking the M5 you'll go past the Garden Centre, then Highbridge and then Taunton!

Hi Chris,

I have a coleman duel fuel for 3 years and have no problems with it . If its been standing for a bit(over winter) I normally flush it out with a can of coleman fuel and run it for about 15 minutes. I always give a squirt of 3 in 1 oil in the pump tube (small hole) which help keeps the pump working normally. Make sure that when you pump that your turn the wheel at least one full which opens the valve allowing you to pump (30 35 times) to build the pressure in the fuel tank. Once this is complete turn the pump wheel back to the lock position. make sure you have the secondary burner turned off (strange key looking thing on the left hand side)and the lighting choke is up. Open the main burner control and you should hear a hearty hissing , place match , phoom!should light. I normally give a few more pumps and then turn the choke down after 5 minutes.

If you still have problems try using coleman fuel only as it is a much cleaner fuel than unleaded which has a lot more crap in it which can clog up the burners over a period of time.

Hope this helps
