Hi,

I've read one or two threads suggesting that the grills on stoves are pretty rubbish, I was going to buy one but having 2nd thoughts now, does anyone have any personal experience good or bad and any reccomendations? If they are crap I won't both and I'll stick to my pack-away one that runs on the canisters and stick to bacon butties in the morning rather than toast!

We have both the suitcase type and the double burner and grill ( campingaz nouvau )

The suitcase has its place for single night camping ,but its really poor compared to the twin burner ,my campingaz stove cookes with the same speed as my cooker at home ,and regardless of what anyone else has said about the grill ,I love mine!! can only do 2 slices at a time tho !

We had a Camping Gaz double burner with grill for years and it served us well. The burners just as quick as the cooker at home and the grill was fine for toast etc. Just had to let it heat up a little longet than the grill at home, (used to leave it on very low at breakfast in case anyone wanted more toast, saved waiting for it to heat up). The only time we noticed that things were slower was when the gas bottle was running out.

I picked up a griddle last week in ESK (Hastings) for £7.99 and it fits a treat over our Campingaz double burner for BBQ-ing.

I`m none too keen on the grills for grilling, but what they are useful for is keeping things warm. I take a cheap metal baking tray that fits into the grill compartment, and food stays warm from the heat of the burners above. I prefer to use a rectangular griddle plate across the two burners for actually griddling, and I make toast by holding the bread above the burners with tongs.

If you do go for a grill compartment, make sure that it has enclosed sides. There are a couple of current stoves that have fold down grill spaces with no side walls. In a drafty tent, you`ll take hours to cook anything on such a grill. The solid side ones take up more packing space yes, but you can always keep the hose, regulator and utensils inside the space.
