Personally I'd put all the light bulky stuff in the roof box like sleeping bags, clothes etc. Hefting 30Kg up to a roof box is no joke and the more weight up top the more it effects the car.

Oh, no roof box  ever thought about getting one?

Hi Stig

there shouldnt be any problem with the bars, they average max weight of 50Kg.

However check your handbbok for roof weights, it should be ok.

As to fastening it to the bars you can buy quite cheap roof boxes from Aldi.

Or try free adds

Im sure if you lashed it on plenty it should stay there. wrap it in a heavy duty garden waste bag or similar.

Sorry i only meant that the roof could handle that weight. We don't have a roof box, I did;nt know if we could just strap the tent onto the roof bars.

thanks shielsy, any idea how cheap. We are broke and go away in 2 weeks, think i will be getting a loan at this rate.

we had an old tent bag and filled it with the sleeping bags and pillows etc...they take up loads of room in the car and we didnt have to worry about weight then...

I did think about getting one but we put down a large tarp ( so that the excess was hanging all round, then put all the bulky stuff on top, ie kitchen, chairs, table. Just making sure that both ends were resting on each of the bars.

Wrapped the tarp round and then used 2 large straps ( that have the metal rachet handel ), one front to back the other left to right. Then loads of bungees, making sure they went round the roof bars aswell as the very large blue parcel we now had.

The test was to go down the road, break sharply and see if it came off
