I have no idea about these things, but is it safe to have your tent on the top of the car, strapped to roof bars? space in the car is very limited with 6 of us and we can't afford a roof box. The tent weighs about 30kg and a roof box can carry upto 50kg so i think the weight will be ok, i just worry about it slipping. I worry about everything.
Personally I'd put all the light bulky stuff in the roof box like sleeping bags, clothes etc. Hefting 30Kg up to a roof box is no joke and the more weight up top the more it effects the car.
Oh, no roof box ever thought about getting one?

Sorry i only meant that the roof could handle that weight. We don't have a roof box, I did;nt know if we could just strap the tent onto the roof bars.
we had an old tent bag and filled it with the sleeping bags and pillows etc...they take up loads of room in the car and we didnt have to worry about weight then...so if you happen to have a bag around that works just as well or even with one of our tents everything came in two bags and then one big bag to put them all in which wasnt then used

If you load anything in a bag on the roof, use those ratchet loading straps from B&Q. They're a lighter version of the straps that truckers use. You can get a terrific tension on them. The tent will never shift.
I did think about getting one but we put down a large tarp ( so that the excess was hanging all round, then put all the bulky stuff on top, ie kitchen, chairs, table. Just making sure that both ends were resting on each of the bars.
Wrapped the tarp round and then used 2 large straps ( that have the metal rachet handel ), one front to back the other left to right. Then loads of bungees, making sure they went round the roof bars aswell as the very large blue parcel we now had.
The test was to go down the road, break sharply and see if it came off
