I'm in the process of acquiring a set of proper Renault roof bars for my Mk2 Scenic off a friend who's selling her Mk1 Scenic.
Just a query - how do they fit? Her car has the roof strips with holes pre-cut - mine doesn't (i.e. they're solid and one piece the whole way along). Do I simply cut holes in mine or am I better to swap strips with her (and do they just lift off - how do they fix at each end)?
Also, after I lifted the strips on my car to take a peak I was expecting to find holes in the roof to take some kind of bolt-assembly - there were none, just a thin piece of metal sticking up with bits cut out of it every so often. Do the bars fit to these and if so, how - or should the car have holes pre-drilled? Haven't a clue to be honest.
I may end up looking at hers before she takes them off if I get the chance (or asking Renault who haven't been very helpful so far) but as you are such a knowledgeable bunch I know they'll be someone along to clarify things! Thanks in advance.
You cannot fit the bars from a Mk1 to a Mk2,if you attempt it you may end up damaging the roof at best or the bars becoming detached when driving and causing a accident.
If i was you, i'd get in touch with your local renault dealer, We had a 2002 Scenic and had halfords fit roofbars, on the understanding that we'd be getting a new one within months. They assured us that these would fit the new one. We bought a new Scenic last year.......They didn't!!!!!, Renault confirmed this.
'03 was the year of the shape change to the new shape - mine's an '02 which is the same fit as the Mk1 of earlier years - that must be why the Thule kits are the same for that span of years. It looks like they just don't do the new shape ones so it sounds like I might be OK.
The only worry is this "fixpoint" thing that you're talking about - think I best speak to Renault!!
Fixpoint is the newer style of fitting manufacturers are using,The roof bars bolt down onto points predrilled and treaded by the manufacturers onto specially strenghtened areas on the cars roof.
As far as im aware you cannot retrofit this type of system and it sounds like your friends roof was fixpoint and yours isnt im afraid, hence the precut holes in her roof.
Post 2003 bars will not fit pre 2003. (For post 2003 on Thule look at renault Scenicrather than renault megane scenic).
Fixpoint relates to have a designated fixing point on the car. With the post 2003 Scenic this is a pre-threaded hole under a pop-up lid. On earlier scenics this may have been located under a sliding slit or more likely the whole plastic strip has to be removed.
To confuse matters some post 2003 Scenic bars are labelled as being from Scenic II. This may be because the new shape is the MkII in Renault's view (the two prior shapes being different versions of the MkI).
With so many variations around no wonder you cant get a straight answer!

------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
Sorry to take this slightly off topic but I have a '04 Grand Scenic with the (nearly) full length sunroof and I'm wondering why Thule say you can't have their roofbars if you have a sunroof? Is it because the sunroof weakens the roof and thus you risk breaking the glass during loading the box or is it because you can't open the sunroof?
After speaking again to (the rather unhelpful) Renault today, I'm fairly confident at this stage that the bars will fit.
According to them there shouldn't actually be any holes in the roof to take bolts, etc - the bars simply clamp to the fittings under the roof strips (which mine seems to have).
Will keep you posted and thanks for all the replies.
Yes - they fit perfectly! Took me about 5 minutes and they look great.
I ended up swapping roof strips with my friend - they just clip off and they're not fixed at all.
The bars then simply clamp through the holes in the strips to the thin strips of metal that stick up underneath - superb!
They fix with a star-headed alan bolt (I'm sure there's a fancy name for them) and all the keys do is lock a cover over these bolts so they can't be tampered with. If anyone needs any pointers re: fitting then let me know.
