yes calor gas is ok for bbq

if you was given a regulator and hose with the bottle i would advise you get new ones(unless you can garuntee they are not old as the rubber corodes over time) also make sure you have the correct regulator for the bottle your using

only time calor is no good is if you want to use it in very cold weather if you do you need propane

ps the only silly question is one that is not asked

Sorry to contradict you, but Calor gas IS propane gas, and will wirk perfectly well in cold weather. It`s butane gas as in CampingGaz that dislikes the cold.

But you`re right to say that whatever the gas used, the correct regulator is essential.

Calor is the manufacturer and provide both butane and propane gas (butane in the blue canisters and propane in the orange) So it depends on what colour calor container you have as to whether it'll be OK to use for your Xmas dinner! Orange is OK, blue you might struggle!

Interestingly, I found out this summer, - I always thought that when you exchanged your calor gas canister for a full one, you had to exchange like for like. Not so. You can exchange a small one for a big one and just pay the price of the gas with no extra charge for the upgrade.

I learned something this weekend - we bought a new BBQ and it came with a new regulator - nice click on one. went off to the chandlry place to sort out the gas bottle as we have an organge Calor type. The nice lady there told me it was a special regulator for BBQ gas bottles!!! WTF!!! 'BBQ gas' said I!!! The nice lady repeated yes BBQ gas made by Calor special for BBQ's and costs twice as much as regular propane and butane for the same size! 'Bull doodoo' said I Gas is gas! Ok propane and butane are different but they are still gas!

If Calor think I am going to pay an arm and a leg - Oh and half my first born - they can think again! What a rip off!!! Posh new bottle and they think they can pull the wool over everyones eyes - Dont fall into their trap folks - its a con *insert rolleyes smilie here*

missizippi, so if you were to go camping in oct/nov with blue gas (campingaz gas) what would happen if it gets too cold? will it just not work?

Point of order, I understand 'Calor' to mean Butane but I suppose it depends how old you are?  Once upon a time Calor supplied Calor in light green bottles and nobody thought then to ask what gas was inside as long as the regulator fitted!!

As for the new fangled Patio gas not BBQ it's a 60-40% mixture of both Propane and Butane

i'd like to know the answer to this one too, as we are booked in for new year and only have butane - would some sort of lagging around the bottles work/help???

hi

from what i understand as it has a lower boiling point so at lower temps the gas wants to stay as a liquid rather than turn to gas which means it doesnt expand and push itself out of the bottle if im wrong someone will be in to slap my wrist hopefully

not sure if lagging bottle would help tbh but personaly i wouldnt think so as bottle would still get as cold as outside temp eventually lagging would only slow it down not stop it getting cold

You want the orange propane for winter and summer if you like, but calor blue bottle butane gas does not work below a certain temp! People that dont have gas supplies use the calor (orange ) propane gas for homes as do static caravans.
