I am looking for recommendations for a TV antenna which picks up digital freeview channels without too much messing about. By that I mean one that you basically just plug in and that's it, not all that hold it there, left a bit, right a bit polava.

You wont find one. Freeview is reliant upon the transmitter that is nearest you so you will still need to point it in the right direction. I had a freeview tuner for my laptop and used both a normal ariel and an amplified one, and of the 4 visits to Cornwall was only able to get reception once that could be called acceptable.
