Thats what I thought until I came to fit them and the roof strip is solid all the way along.

Correct, I have a 54 plate Scenic and that has the 'flaps'

Might be worth a quick trip to your nearest Mr Renault dealer for advice.

I have read of someone somewhere who just pulls the rubber strips out of the way where the bars connect. Might be worth trying before you cut!

There are two types of roof bars for a renault scenic. The type with the flaps are totally different roof bars to the type which has the rubber rail running the length of the roof.

For scenic's with the rubber rail, the roof bars do NOT fit onto the rubber rail or underneath it!!!

These rails fit under the door frame.

The roof bars which fit scenic's with the fixed rubber rail are wider than the roof bars which clip into the flap.

Quote from www.renaultforums.co.uk

"the types of Real Renault roof racks that fit on the "Special Roof Strips" (as found on ebay) fit exactly the same on the ones with rubber strips. You just have to twist the rubber strip up round the roof rack mounting. it is quite painless and has never caused me any problems.

Just make sure they include the Torx Key to tighten the bars or you will have to buy a T40 Torx Bit. (i speak from experience here )"

"when you unlock the plastic cover on the bar, underneath you will find a fixing plate held on by a torx bolt (you should have been given an allen key for this, if not you need a T40 Torx bit) remove this plate on both sides of the bar.

now all you need to do is peel back the rubber strip from one end on both sides of the car (it comes off with a twisting motion towards the outside of the car, try it at one end you will see it is actually easier than it sounds. It is also very easy to refit. kind of like a seal round a door) to where you want the bar to be.

Underneath the rubber strip you will find fixing brackets that match the lug on the roof bar (my mounts that i use ar roughly 2" in front over the front door and about the same over the back door). clip the fixing plate onto the bracket and refit the bolt on both sides. when you are happy with the position tighten the bolt and lock the plastic cover.

Repeat at the other end of the strip with the other bar.

Now all i did was twist/bend the rubber strip round the roofrack mounts and re-fit into the channel (so i could put them back to normal when i take the roofrack off).

this twisted strip has never moved and i and my family have traveled/camped our way around Europe this summer with a roof box mounted on the bars to carry our gear (which was great fun )."

and

"You can buy 2 different types of genuine Renault bars for your Scenic.A cheaper standard version that clamps on to the roof just above the doors.
Alternatively you can buy new "rubber strips" and bars from Renault - these are the type of bars your manual refers to.

You can also buy Thule or Halfords bars that fit in the same way as the "cheaper" genuine Renault bars."
