I use a small solar panel just to keep my battery topped up, whilst im not using it, but you would need a very large panel to replace electric hook up surely.

my panel would not replace the power used,  it only supplies a very small trickle charge.

I have a caravan, but can go away for weeks on end with just solar power (and gas for fridge/cooking), we find electric h/ups ok for winter use.

our main holidays are always without h/up, and we have lights & watch tv etc. but you will need a battery to keep all this free power in
