Hi all,

With these long winter nights I was thinking of getting a small 10" lcd tv, with built in freeveiw tuner. I have a boosted status aerial system on the van roof, so would this give a decent signel for the freeveiw tv ??

Hi SilverFoxy!

I think you should get a decent enough reception for your freeview with the equipment you've got no probs!!  Thats what I need for my freeview, a booster!!

Also i wanted reply to get rid of your blue face LOL!!

Hi SF, I think you might find a 10" a bit small, why not go for a 14" or a 15" LCD, don't take up much room and give a very good picture. In weak signal areas you may need a proper directional aerial on the roof for your freeview.. IMO Boosters generally amplify the noise as well as the signal.

Hi silverfoxy.

Hate to put damper on things!        What status aerial do you have? I have the flying saucer and booster.......... I have never been able to get a decent signal yet, certainly not enough for freeview.

I have an external one like this Image 530/18 UHF Directional TV Antenna  again much depends on the reception for that area.

check out these previous forums for more info.

We were on a site this weekend that is supposed to have good freeview reception but we got nothing with the flying saucer, even on full boost.

Status aerial  ... hmmm  ....

Has anyone considered contacting trading standards about Status aerials, its rediculous that these things are called aerials when they are actually attenuators.

Over the years I have had them on three new vans and the only way I can get a picture is to unplug the status bit from the amplifier or even better unplug the whole thing from the back of the TV. This is at home where the signal is so strong I dont actually need an aerial but plug in the Status and .... no picture.

Mmmm,

interesting replies, thanks for the links to other posts as well.

Firstly I have the flying saucer type of status, the early one, not the push-up mast thing I've seen at shows. I hooked up the home freeveiw box in the van and everything is fine. So in my area the van matches the house roof mounted aerial perfectly.

What happens on site, well I won't know untill I get there!. General opinion suggests that reception will not be too great, although I appear to be in the minority of having a status that works!!

We use the arial the Shielsy has pictured. It gives a great picture as long as you face it in the direction of the main TV mast. The saucer arial is ok but it depends on the surrounding area ie hills, trees, buildings etc.

Why do caravan manufacturers put ruddy status ariels on caravans. they always advertise them as if they are some kind of bonus and I have yet to have one that actually works!!! We have just bought one of those things pictured above and put it up on a pole for the first time when we went to Castlerigg Hall at Keswick a couple of weeks ago. That didn;t work either but I suspect it was because we were right in some trees and it was blowing a storm.  We are going to Knaresborough in a couple of weeks so hopefully it will work there ( can't miss stictly come dancing!)

Hi Caroline M, we were at castlerigg farm in the summer also with the ariel on a stick above. We had poor reception too, lots of 'ghosting' and not a snip of a digital signal when we tried to tune it in! We put it down to the hills, as in Keswick cc&c in the town center have a perfect picture, at blackpool we even got channel 5. Other folks with status ariels seemed to have perfect pictures though.... dont think you can win!

We have just ordered a new 'van and this time I will bombard Grade with complaints if it works as badly as the last three, up until now I have not bothered complaining as everyone knows they dont work ... but NO MORE !! I want one that works or a refund !!

Unfortunately I suspect that it will be the poor dealer who will be left to face the music and thats not what I want to acheive. Maybe thats why Grade get away with making sh1t because they are two levels away from the complaining consumer :(

Well.  Our status aeriel must be out of the norm then because we've had excellent reception on every site but one - and that one wasn't too bad.

Sorry to spoil the fun, but dispite the range of other systems on show, including some very DIY high masts ( 2x2 timber!!)  the old saucer came up trumps!!!

Even took the freeveiw box along and enjoyed superb picture quality.

Cannot understand why so many? experience poor results.

A directional aeriel will always give better reception than an omni-directional aeriel.  For one thing it cuts down on ghosting caused by the signal being reflected off buildings etc.  Also the signal can be better focussed as long as the aeriel is set up in the right direction.

The directional status aeriels might be worth having but judging by ther balance of reports on here the omni-directional ones seem only good for high signal areas.
