Hello all.
My friend was most impressed with my Tilley lamp when we were camping in the Summer so his wife has told me she wants to buy him a Tilley Stormlight for Christmas. Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy them from by mail order/internet. There is always ebay but she would like to buy new.
Look rather expensive to me although I know they are a quality lamp. However, I swear by the coleman dual fuel lamps and we have half a dozen of them in my Scout group. They are very reliable if you handle them with care they will last for years, oh and they give off a huge amount of light. W have replaced a couple of generators on two of the lamps but we have had them for about 6-8 years and they are used for about 10 weeks in each year.

I agree. Coleman dual fuel every time.
Can't remember seeing Tilly gear in a camping shop where as Coleman are represented in most / virtually all camping shops.........

i would never be without my tilley , after over 25 years of service it still works as well as the first time I used it, brilliant light and great heat . yes they are expensive but then again you have to pay for quality and in return you will get many years of service from it.
I don't really like them that much myself, i useLED lighting, very safe, very light weight, low power drain, low running cost. The petrol/ Paraffin lamps use about a pint and a half for 10 or 12 hours of light. If you camp for two weeks thats a lot of fuel £s, and storage etc. My power pack 12 volt dc runs my LED lights for about a month on one charge. I run about six of them in two tents
But i would go for the Coleman duel fuel...
Not bad is it? As someone already said you can get parts in almost any camping shop... Unlike the Tilley.
Somebody else says you get what you pay for, the Coleman is Not cheap.
The traditional favourite still shines brightly (three strange people bring you Frankenstein and Mir)! Called 'dual fuel' because of its ability to run either on Coleman Fuel or unleaded petrol, you can totally rely on this robust, durable camping lantern with its 14 hours of burn time.

Thanks for the replies. I inherited my Tilly lamp. Hadn't been used in almost twenty years until last Summer. Worked without any problems. Find them very atmospheric, I like the hizz and the smell of the paraffin and the meths. Brings back so many memories. My friend who took a liking to it is well aware of coleman lamps but doesn't like the idea of using petrol. They're also made with plastic. We've both got young families so self suffiency and fuel availabilty is not an issue.
The reason for me is the cloeman only needs one fuel but the tilly needs two: parafin to run on, meths to pre heat. Light output depends on the model, we use two of the twin mantle powerhouse one either end of the awning, prehaps a bit over the top but we have had them since our camping days were it was one either end of our dineing shelter, but it always means that if i have to go for water etc. one is left in the awning
one other point, the amount of heat that they generate is great may be that is why it was always our tent that everyone gathered at or was it the spare fridge full of cider?
I would jump at another tilley , we did a comparison at a campsite last year with both the tilley and the coleman , the tilley had more heat and light coming from it . having said that the coleman was quite good but a definite second place.
I've got TWO new/20 year old ones up in the Attic, I haven't given them a thoght until reading this thread. We used to use them on the famt at lambing time or if we needed to go out during the night to see to an animal for any reason. I can remember the smell now, something very different than a gas lamp of today. I'll have to get some parafin & meths & give them a try.
