We've got the Khyam day shelter which is 3m x 3m, you have to stoop a bit to get in but onve in there's plenty of headroom. Two sides roll up and two sides don't, we put it up as a porch to our tent and it worked fine. With all doors down it stays snug thanks to the mud flap things and it's ideal for cooking and eating in. As a guide, there's enough room for 3 chairs on each side with space in the middle, so its roomy enough to cook in and eat for a family of four or five. As for sturdiness, we were impressed as despite the flimsy guyropes (which you could replace) it stood up to the windy cliffs of Bridlington. All this for £95!

Just thought I'd add that you can just about make the Khyam out in our gallery pic, in between our 'nissen hut' and our green gazebo!

good_in_tent - thank you i will view that one it sounds perfect - and khyam are a quick erect system if my memory is correct which again sounds perfect.

Our monty 4 is just right for us but to have that overspill to cook in especially now we are camping with our little one will be great - an example of when i found it difficult was first thing in a morning when it was raining - dont want to cook in our 'new' tent so it was a windbreak and umberella - running in and out for pans and passing food in and out - would have been brill on 'its a knock out' !!!!

Still on the same thread - what extra costs to pitch this kyham day shelter would we be looking at???

thanks again

Hi

I have a Khyam garden shelter which opens up on four sides and is 3m x 3m.  It is a very sturdy shelter and has kept quite a few of us dry when the weather has turned for the worst.  It has stood up to some windy conditions when other folks tents have been blowing away.  They are usually less than £100.  It has been my cooking and dining shelter for three years and I would not be without it when camping.  Of course I have now wimped out and bought a folding camper but have kept all the canvas just in case!!  The Khyam is quick - I can do it on my own in about five mins including the four corner tri -ropes.  Only downside is that it is quite large when packed away so if space is at a premium it might be too large!

Hopes this helps!

It seems a shame to have a lovely comfortable living area with SIG and then not use it. Is it because or crumbs etc? Why not just put down an old rug to catch the crumbs? MT

Ours packs into a really small bag so doesn't take up much space at all and while I'm not sure about it being a 'quick erect' system, it is really quick and easy to erect! As for extra cost, it depends on the sites. We have paid extra (up to £3 per night), but sometimes when we have forgotten to mention it we've not paid any extra. It's quite versatile as you could claim it was a kitchen tent, a pup tent or a gazebo and just hedge your bets on which is cheaper to put up!!

As for not cooking in the tent, I'm with you on that. We have a HUGE living area but with three boys who revert back to the wild every time we go camping, it's better for the life of the tent for them to eat outside. Also as HIM INDOORS cooks when we're away, there's certain health and safety considerations to take into account i.e. he might burn the bloody tent down if he cooked in it

Me again, have just found the Royal Day room and I must say I like the look of it. And handy that it comes with a groundsheet. The blurb said that there was no cover for the windows, but it looks like there are covers rolled up above?!

Bucks Camping. They had one on Ebay which I ended up winning for £82 incl free delivery, which was a fantastic bargain. On their website they have them for £110 but if you phone them up on:

TEL: +44(0)1296 728770  they will do them for £90 as they have a load in stock and Sunncamp are changing the design slightly for 2007.

I don't like having the table up in the SIG because a. it takes up too much room which is in great need with 3 small children and b. my 3 small children make lots of sticky messes when eating and I don't want to be washing the SIG all the time. Crumbs yes, juice and splats of food no.

Hey thanks for that Amanda. I will probably go with that because I'm not that bothered about a groundsheet and the square shape means it will fit with either of our tents. Cheers!
