We have a Vango Aspen 700 DLX and have two 12W inspection tube lights as the main EHU light source. What are your views on how much light is required in a tent for it to be adaquate and what would constitute too much that may annoy the neighbours both inside and outside the tent? Is light pollution while camping a problem??!!

I think as long as you dim the lights by 11pm (or whenever the campsite curfew is) then you`d be okay with two 12W lights, but maybe reduce it to one after this. By that time you`ll have finished all the chores, one hopes! If you need light for reading after this, then you cam get clip on book lights, or for cards etc you can use a battery operated table lamp. Better to use specific point source lights than illuminate the whole tent anyway.

Word of warning for ALL light users...anything you do while standing between the light and the wall of the tent is going to show up as a giant shadow puppet show. Taking your clothes off or scratching your bottom included!

Remember the golden rule with lighting.....tungston lamps get hot and will burn a hole in a tent in no time, be sure to use flourescent instead.

Also, be sure that the cartridge fuse (in the plugtop) is suitably rated, a 3A is plenty, anything higher than a 3A is potentially dangerous.

Check that you do not overload the rated current (amps) of the EHU supply.

(Trust me, i teach this stuff).

GARY.

We find a single 12w inspection lamp mounted high in our Monty 12 is enough so 2 should be fine in almost all tents. The bonus is they don't generate much heat.

By the way these 12w lamps will only use 0.054 amps so I wouldn't worry too much about overloading the EHU if you stick with these. Fan Heaters & Kettles on the other hand........

Surely, the answer is . . . as much as you need. When you are cooking or some jobs like this you need plenty, when you're just sitting back relaxing not much at all. Directional lights stop the spill anoying neighbours. Looking at this, it's just like at home really. But do heed the warning on tungsten lights, They can burn - or melt - a tent. Use the low wattage ones instead.
