Hi, we have a similar sort of soft roof box, or roof bag. Ours can be used with roof bars, rack or directly onto a special mat on the roof of the car.
I really like it it because it is easy to store, easy to get on and off the car and you don't have to drive around with it on the roof when you're away. It holds loads of stuff - sleepingbags, pillows, thermarests, squashy holdalls etc. Another plus is that its easy to lend to friends or family if need be.
I am not sure how secure many hard shell roof boxes would be against the efforts of a determined thief, but the disadavantage of the soft ones is possibly that they look more vulnerable. This wouldn't be an issue for one-day journeys in the UK but you might want to think about it for eg trips to France where the car might be left unattended on the ferry or if you plan overnight stops en route.
