When we stayed in Spain in September the ground was baked rock hard so we hit on the idea of using the cordless drill and a cheap wood bit to pre drill the holes.
It worked a treat and a bigger bit made holes for the windbreaks.
Other people were using a metal rod and lump hammer to make the holes
I use long screws (6in) with a 13mm hexagon head fitted with the plastic tops off tent pegs and put them in with a cordless drill.
They cost £5 for 40 off the market and when you remove them the unscrewing action has a cleaning effect.
