I have Sky+ installed at home on the full package. I also have a spare receiver that I had previously used before having Sky+. I have managed to set up a dish and tripod for the spare receiver for our caravan, however after setting it all up for the first time and using the viewing card from home I found that I was only able to receive the free to air channels...not the premium package that I thought my viewing card would allow. I have called Sky and asked if two receivers can be used on the one card and they tell me this isn't possible. Their only suggestion is that I extend my package to Multi Room (extra £10 month), they will then send an extra viewing card for use in the caravan. Has anybody else had this problem. Are Sky being a little unfair or should I not be able to expect to take my package with me when I'm away from home. If any body has had similar problems or can offer a solution I'd be very grateful.

Thanks to all.

You can only use the sky card for the receiver it is meant for .if you get the multiroom package  you have to have it connected to the phone line at all times. or you will get a letter off sky. it is ok to use in caravan for about 2 weeks then they send the letter out. just get a duel LNB  and take your sky + with you

Yes I have come across this same problem. We do actually pay the extra £10 per month for the multi room package but the viewing card can only be used theoretically if both boxes are connected to the same telephone line at all times. We do take this viewing card away with us when we go off on our travels but if they suss out it is not connected to your telephone they will send you a warning letter and if it continues they will charge you full price for the 2nd card for that month. I think if you are only away for a few days at a time you should be okay but for any longer I cannot guarentee you wont get caught out. We have been charged before but we have not had any problems in that way for well over a year now and we have been away loads of times. It's maddening though isnt it to think that you pay all that money each month for sky and yet if you want to use it in your caravan or motorhome you get penalised. Surely to goodness if you are paying for this service you should be able to enjoy this service wherever you are in the uk?

We have Sky plus in our motorhome and its ideal if you want to record something whilst you are out and we are able to enjoy the full package that we enjoy back home ie live pause, record 2 channels at the same time function plus all the sky movie and premium channels etc. Sky plus is only possible if you have an Oyster twin LNB satellite receiver installed and I dont think there is a portable satellite dish on the market that will enable you to use a Sky Plus digi box but dont quote me on that as I am no expert.  However, if you do feel you are prepared to pay out the extra £10 per month for multi room you will be able to then take your viewing card with you and enjoy all the channels you have subscribed to at home providing the digibox in your caravan is the same digi box the 2nd viewing card is married to. If its a different dig box then I dont think it would work and you would still only get the free to view channels. A lot of people subscribe to the multi room package and have it put in their bedroom and then when they go away they take the digi box from their bedroom and pop it in the caravan or motorhome and then they can receive the full package without any problems. Like I say theoretically it is supposed to stay connected at all times to the telephone line but if you dont go away for weeks and weeks at a time you may just get away with it!

I hope this all makes sense to you and if so I hope it has helped answer your query?

Good luck and keep us informed on how you get on.

Sooh

Hi nottsian,

Further to the above the reason sky insist on the telphone connection for multi room is that, in theory, 2 neighbours could colude and get in effect, 2 sky packages at a discounted rate. As mentioned above you will need to take the home box with you to get all you subscribe to.

Sooh, i don't have sky+ or multiroom so i'm a little in the dark here, but in my case i bought another minidish (brand new from an aerial shop) for under £20, rather than the IMO overpriced portable options. Can this not be done with the sky+ system cheaper than the Oyster?

Hi Millies dad,

To be honest I dont really know the answer to that one as like I say, I am no expert, all I know it does what we want it to do and we just press a button from inside our motorhome, the dish goes up and we have Sky connection!  I think the best people to ask would be the aerial shop where you purchased your dish from as I am sure they would know.  I know the dish has to have this twin LNB thingy in order to receive Sky Plus and there are several types of Oyster Satellite receivers on the market. Ones that do all the ordinary sky functions etc and the one that we have, that has a few more advanced features such as the twin LNB and free view etc. It is not a cheap system admittedly and a lot of people would find it a luxury that they would not be prepared or happy to pay for but for anyone who is interested here is the  link to the company we bought ours from. http://www.transleisure.co.uk/index.asp

Sorry I cannot be of more assistance.

Sooh
