Due to the St Malo overnight crossing being full for caravans we have had to go to Cherbourg. Which will means a good 7 hour journey to our campsite just north of Les Sables-dOlonne. So we have decided to go a day earlier and stop over night about half way. Does anyone have any suggestions of where we could stop overnight? Thanks

The halfway point is Rennes. There is a good site there open all year. Recent reviews on here. Perhaps a two night stop to spend a day in the city.

July 2025 they have a new ship that doesn’t have a lot of space for caravans

Caen is less than 100 miles further away and is motorway all the way to beyond Roche sur Yon. No more than an extra 2 hours?

Caen didn’t have any space either so that’s why we had to go from Cherbourg.

We have done this journey many times, as most ferrys from Ireland head to Cherbourg. It's perfectly doable in one day (Google times it at 4h 41m / 448km not towing and no stops), and we have done that. However we have also stopped overnight, and if the ferry arrives late morning or afternoon we would stop before Rennes at Haliotis in Pontorson, and if it arrives early morning we would go farther, past Rennes and stop at a municipal eg Les Salorges in Guipry-Messac or even as far as Nantes Camping.

Another vote for Guipry-Messac, gets Rennes out o f the way on day one! There is also Camping la Pindière at Héric a bit further south still and easier/quicker to access from the main road.

Recommend camping les gayeulles in Rennes; it’s a lovely, surprisingly peaceful site. The staff are so friendly and helpful.The guingette by the lake also does good, family friendly food, although check their opening hours if you are going out of high season.
We love Camping Nantes too and it has a very similar feel but it’s quite a hike from Cherbourg for a first night.

Another vote for Nantes camping here.

It's an ACSI site but remember most ACSI discounts stop at the end of June and start again in September.
