Which of you is in France, right now?

We're in beautiful Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, and the weather is great. But, we fancy a move and are just wondering in which direction to head. We like sites with nice pools (necessary for cooling down in temps of 30+), possibly near a lake, a river or the sea (although we know more popular seaside areas will be packed, at this time of year) and - the difficult part - not costing the earth!

So, if you're here at the moment and can recommend your site, please let us know (and if there are any available pitches).

We were thinking of heading up to near Annecy, but the weather there isn't great over the next week or two and there's rain forecast on quite a few days. We prefer to be in the sunshine. Happy to travel up to 5 or 6 hours.

We came back on Thursday after 5 weeks. Not as hot as last year and some rain. We had a good time. Max temperatures about 30 when we at Faverolles sur Cher.

What about a riverside pitch somewhere like Millau - with the Gorge du Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie on your doorstep, the Viaduct in the background, and vultures and hang-gliders over your head. Availability from tomorrow from just over £200 for a week. (Several sites have availability). Somehow in a sea of more expensive campsites those in Millau are very reasonably priced.

Have a look at the ACSI Card site and see what you think of Camping Saint Lambert? Or Camping Millau Plage. Last year we had a look around many of the Millau sites because we were considering storing our caravan nearby. We liked both of those sites, but others may not! They aren't 'CAMC' style with neat pitches, but more 'park somewhere flattish between trees in this woodland' type sites. Saint Lambert is on the Dourbie river, which is accessible, Millau Plage on the Tarn and perhaps less accessible for the older and (getting) less fit. We also like sites further up the Gorge du Tarn, but they tend to get less daytime hours of sunshine in some places because the Gorge is narrow and the sun rises and goes down later.

But Millau is not like St Remy de Provence - it's a somewhat busy 'working town' still going about making a living from something other than tourism.

I would second Val. We were in the Millau area about 5/6 weeks ago because where we had planned to go (Brittany) had poor weather forecast. We stayed at the 2 Rivers site which we liked but has no pool. Previously have stayed at the Huttopia site and camping Les Rivages and both have a pool. We looked into Les Erables and this looked nice for a future stay. We really like the town of Millau but as Val said it is no Remy and more of a working town but lots of restaurants, market etc. it is a fantastic area and very good value, particularly in ACSI season.

We love Sommieres and stay at the ex-muni site La Garanel. It has a small pool, is almost on the riverside, and within a short drive to the Med. Being slowly refurbished since being taken over last year. 17 euro with Acsi discount but peak season now until 24/8. Forecast looks good See my reviews on here.

Another option is to go to Uzes - a delightful small town near the Roman Pont du Gard - and there are several good sites nearby with pools - perhaps Camping Mas de Rey.

ValA’s call of Millau is a good one. I stayed at the
Huttopia Millau a few weeks ago, while it was really quiet. It’s right next to the Graufesenque meadows, where you can access both the Dourbie and the Tarn; and where there’s a great view of the Viaduct. One of the places the hang gliders come in to land. The managers and staff are really friendly, and helpful. My write-up

Huttopia site sounds fine - all that chain usually is - but the downside of that one you mention is that it is at Millau - an overcrowded, overvisited, workaday, charmless town .

We arrived at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne today.
Good site on the banks of the river ... own beach ... restaurant/Bar etc
Plus belle village bodes well.

You don't go to that area for the town, but for the gorges, the flowers, the river, the vultures and eagles, beavers, drives up the sides of the gorges, I could go on. The town is convenient for shopping.

I agree. We like it for all those reasons, and because staying further up the Tarn Gorge brings shorter days as the sun goes down more quickly in the steep sided valleys. We've also seen bee eaters around the campsites there, and I also love watching the paragliders as the sun goes down. We have a great photo of a paraglider silhouetted against the Mlllau viaduct in the background.
