Hi All - this campsite seems to have good reviews and ticks all the boxes for a 1 night stopover on our way to Port Grimaud. We want to stop on Saturday 9.8 which I presume will be a very busy weekend.I have tried to contact the campsite to book but they are closed until middle of March. So can any of you wise owls on here advise if booking at this site is possible because we dont want to leave it to chance as maybe after 19.00 hrs when we arrive. We will be towing a caravan.
Thanks Sue

Macon is a great site, although it is a good number of years since we stayed. I remember getting there mid afternoon, and round about tea time there was a steady stream of arrivals. As an aside, have also stayed at Macon in the Campanile hotel. every time we have been there, camp or hotel, there has been a thunder storm!

We stay there most years, my reviews are on here. We always try to arrive by about 4pm as there are queues to get in. They are a professional bunch there, so I expect you to be able to book. However, they don't allocate pitches, it's a free for all, and I don't ever remember seeing reserved pitches. Also there is a barrier down all the time, so if you arrive after 7 ish when reception probably closes, I don't know how you would get in.
Sounds rather negative I'm afraid, but that's how it is.
We would divert a little off the main road and arrange to stop over at Chatillon sur Chalaronne - it's South East of Macon.
A lovely site, in a lovely town, with a brand new indoor/ outdoor pool being built when we were there last June, and we'd make it a two night stop to go again to the bird park nearby at Villars les Dombes - condors, eagles , macaws, enormous pelicans, etc zooming inches overhead in their afternoon open air free flying display.
For families with children that is worth having one day less at Port Grimaud..And for seniors , lunch at the Hotel du Commerce in Chatillon is a must. Is the race to a destination always the best plan?
Hi thanks for the replies so far. That was good info Franbee not negative as we need to know the facts.
Site in Port Grimaud already booked and with just 2 weeks off work need to get to destination as soon as is safely possible. Travelling Carlisle to Calais day one and then to Macon next day and onto Port Grimaud. We have holidayed in France for 10 years so long days traveling are no problem only 1 son with us now and is 17 we do plenty of stops but do want to get to the South without too much delay but thanks for the info on the other site berriow - one for the future when we have more time on our hands. I think I might have to wait until the campsite opens and ask about booking and reception opening times don't want to be under pressure to arrive by 7pm wish just in case of traffic hold ups etc I like to plan with all bases covered as much as I can.
Any other stopover suggestions around there and just a short hop off the motorway would be appreciated also.

We stopped overnight in Macon on the 7th. June last year, and asked if we could book for our return trip in mid July, but was informed that they don't take any bookings. However, we called in on our homeward trip on the 15th. July, and they had loads of empty spaces overnight.
They do have a security man on the barrier after the office closes, but I have no idea how payment can be made. (There must be some arrangement though, as the office does close quite early - perhaps it's a case of paying at the bar, which is close to the entrance).
There are campsites at Beaune, and also one at Tournus, which is just a bit north of Macon. Similar sort of site though much smaller, and no pool. Reviewed on here.
Macon campsite can be very busy in July and August. We try and get there early. I have often seen the gate closed because the site is full by six pm. Its a great site when going north or south as it is close to motorway and has excellent facilities (new toilet blocks put up in the last couple of years)

We stayed there in October 2013 for one night and arrived after the office was closed. The barrier was open (no security man) and a sign asked to go to the office in the morning and pay for the night.

We took Berriows advise and went to Chatillon sur Chalaronne instead of Macon at the beginning of July on our way south and stayed a couple of nights. We loved it, so much so that we stayed there again on our way north. I'll post a review as soon as possible.
Hi Mitchells, Glad you liked that one. It's a while since we were drinking together at the campsite party at Eygalieres. Next time you are right down there try Camping Le Pesquie, just outside that village. More space , but not smart like the Chatillon site. Go well !
I was looking for a site in that sort of area & really did fancy the Macon site. Went for the Muni at Beaune in the end ... and they replied almost instantly (within half an hour, I just checked the email!)
(Now I'm having a look at Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne to see what I missed
Word of caution, the BP filling outside the entrance has been demolished and there is major construction work going on.
If you happen to pitch up near the entrance don't expect to hear the birds chirping. Even at the back of the site you will still hear some noise.
You can also tell how bad the rain has been as quite a lot of pitches have very few blades of grass left.
