AM looking for recommendations for sites near to Portsmouth which are flexible for ferry times, departing and arriving. Have stayed at Dibles site which was good but is there somewhere nearer? Caravan 2 adults 2 dogs.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Why not come and go and stay for free at Port Solent Marina? Lots of restaurants and cafes there too but your dogs may be a problem for that, so phone and check.
You could stay at Sunnydale Caravsn site which is about 15 miles from the port. Quite expensive but you come and go as you please as gate works on ANPR. We have left at 4.30am before.
We have used Rookesbury Park. The ferry pitches are outside of the site barrier so you come and go as you need to. However, there are only a few ferry pitches so you need to book early.
To be blunt, the aggravation of finding suitable accommodation and the cost is why our favoured ferry crossing is the overnight with cabin, both ways! It also makes for good relaxed journeys as timings work well (for us anyway!) on both sides of channel. If it's marginally more expensive in cash terms, it's countered by the relaxed overall experience and peace of mind, an extra expense we feel is worth it, and we're a tight fisted bunch!
If you want to make use of Port Solent (one of our favourite stop offs on way to the port, for a meal/drink before the ferry), it is quite dog friendly, with a number of restaurants accepting dogs at outside tables. Check the individual restaurants on the web site to see which ones are dog friendly: https://www.portsolent.com/dining
