Val, what was the name of the campsite you have previously stayed at? I seem to remember Beavers and vultures overhead.

Les Rivages at Millau had both, but I think that there are more sites in that area

Thanks Mrs Bonce but it wasn’t Les Rivages - we have been there in the past at Val’s suggestion and liked it but fancy something new. It was a site a bit out of Millau.

Hi,
It was Val de Cantobre. We stayed there as well many years ago But I think it’s a very different place now

We've stayed at Val de Cantobre at Nant, which has beavers nearby, and vultures overhead, but was family owned when we used to go almost every year! As someone says it has now changed, and is a 'corporate site' run by RCN the Dutch company.

I think you're probably thinking of Les Peupliers, at Riviere sur Tarn. Again, vultures overhead, beaver in the river, and good canoeing. We have stayed at other sites in the area, though not recently, as we've had our caravan in the Ardeche and if we have travelled elsewhere it's been a bit further afield. Again Les Peupliers used to be family run - one of my 'importants' as it tends to me that the family put their heart and soul into a site. The last time we went it was still in the same family but not sure now as it seems to have changed names to 'Camping Canoe Gorges du Tarn. (There is another much smaller site also called Les Peupliers at Le Rozier - we almost missed meeting up with close friends when they ended up at 'the wrong' Les Peupliers).

Thanks Val it was Les Peupliers. It seemed like the kind of place we would enjoy when you mentioned it before. If it has changed name I guess it may have changed ownership but location will be the same and hopefully the vultures are still there!

It's very likely you'll see them, and if they're not overhead a short drive will take you to the Belvedere de Truel where there is a viewing area with telescopes set up on the cliffs opposite.

When we were first at Val de Dantobre in 1981 we went to a talk about the 'newly introduced Vultures in the Gorge du Tarn' and i think there were four pairs then. Last time we were there something like 80 pairs was mentioned.

Enjoy your stay Lizzie.

My informant tells me that when they are fledging, young vultures quite often crash land in the middle of the Huttopia Tarn Gorges site. They have a number they ring to call the man who puts it in a van and drives them back up the cliff for another go!
The Belvedere, billed as the Maison des Vautures, was a great experience. My grandson now sports a vulture t-shirt from there!

Thank you. We ended up staying at the Two Rivers site as it’s so near town but may come back this way on our way home and can try Les Peupliers. Last night we saw the most amazing display of vultures amongst the paragliders from our pitch. There were 4 large vultures circling around for quite some time. I think this area has to be one of the best we’ve been to in France. Our initial plan was Brittany but the weather encouraged us this way and I’m very glad it did. (But supposed to rain tonight). We will head on to Provence tomorrow. Xx

There are several nice sites along that section of the Tarn, Les Deux Rivieres, Millau Plage, Les Erables - we had a look around them all last year when deciding where to move our caravan. At this time of year several of them are only 13 euros per night - £10.97 for pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, electricity and one dog!
