Just spent a few delightful nights here on the refurbished city campsite, review will follow.
However, I just wanted to say a bit about the city. They have been following a policy of prioritising cycling to get around, this trip we found that they have removed a lot of traffic lights at junctions so motorists have to be very slow and careful going through. Also many more cycle ways installed. The road down from the campsite to the bridge has just 1 lane plus a cycle lane on each side and a footpath on 1 side. A helpful pictorial signs shows the motorist how to navigate this. And another road following the river south has been made 1 way for cars with a 2 way cycle lane.

We could do with some of this in the UK.

Did you see the Son et Luminere at the Cathereral well worth visiting Chartres for that.

We saw that last year - definitely well worth seeing.

Done it several times - don't know if they still do but they used to run a bus from near the cathedral to all the different son et lumiere sites in the town.

Yes, we always go to see it, most years, sometimes twice. They still run the little tourist train round as well, but we cycle. The main show at the Cathedral has been extended. You can see it on YouTube.

Many people are still put off by the 'old' Chartres campsite (including us) where the shower and toilet doors were rotting off their hinges, the pitches unkempt and waterlogged, the place full of unsavoury characters, and the management downright surly! Recent reviews suggest a vast improvement.

When we visited last year we stayed at the municipal site at Courville sur Eure (review left) as it was more suitable for our dogs.
When visiting Chartres we left the dogs in the car in one of the underground car parks (so they would be out of the sun) as they don’t do busy places. Very reasonable rates early evening onwards and Sundays, as I recall.

We are just back from four days in Chartres ... staying with friends.
The Son et Lumiere sites are wonderful ... just over twenty of them if you do the full circuit!
The biggest at the cathedral (though not necessarily the best, imho).
The little tourist train does take you to about half the sites ... can't access all ... best way is to walk or cycle.
There used to be a guiding path of lights inset on pavements/roads etc which you could follow round the circuit ... this appears to be largely defunct now ... no idea whether it will be replaced ... so make sure you have the map ... paper of googled, so's you don't get lost!

Sounds fantastic. We couldn’t get in to the site late September last year as so many pitches were water logged but it’s on our hit list for future.
