We are currently in Burgundy but going to head south as there seems to be rain forecast for most other areas for the next week. I have found 2 possible ACSI sites - one in Vauvert and the other in Sommieres. Has anyone stayed near/in either town? We would really like to be close to cycle paths.

We stayed on the municipal site in Sommieres. IMHO a better bet than the ACSI site some way out. Cheaper too at the time (a few years ago now). Close to town (obviously 😄) but also more options for going places by bike. Cycled past the ACSI site, which seemed to be completely under trees, whereas the municipal was a lot more open, which we prefer. But everyone is different, depends what you like.

Sommieres, definitely. We've stayed at both sites in Sommieres, and like Ina prefer the muncipal site which is also eight euros per night cheaper with the ACSI card. Domaine de Masserau has some great pitches, but some terrible ones, which are difficult to access because of trees, roots, and uneven terrain. The market and the Marche aux Puces in Sommieres are definitely worth a visit even from elsewhere.

We haven't stayed at Vauvert, which is right on the top edge of the Camargue, and a bit 'western cowboys' sort of a place. Nearby Gallician is as near to the Wild West as you will get in France.

we stayed at Junas, just down the cycle route from Sommières. I agree the ACSI site seemed to rest in Stygian gloom, uninviting and expensive.

We didn't go too much on the municipal site either as it seemed horribly cramped. However it was just over the river stepping stones to a wholesale wine shop, so did have redeeming features.

Sommieres is a pleasant place and we've been a couple of times for an afternoon out. I have heard that the 'posh' site has changed hands and the new ownership has endeared itself to customers. My choice would be the municipal site so that you can walk into town.

Why just those two? They are completely different places. And why limit yourselves to ACSI sites?

We have just left the town site in Sommieres, It may not be municipal any more, a young couple took over last year and are making many improvements. We love it there, you can walk out of the site to the town, or river, or take the bike. The voie verte is accessed from the old station on the other side of town or from back up the road past Lidl.

Note, either arrive before 12 when reception closes until 5. After 12 they pin up a sheet showing empty pitches so you go and choose one and pay later. No barrier. It was full most of the 4 nights we were there.

2 sites spring to mid in/around Sommieres both good.
Domaine de Massereau which Val A mentioned.
Also worth a look is camping Gajan - I would've thought this is slightly cheaper. When I was there a few years ago they took ACSI. Decent restaurant on site and a great pool.

Sommieres old town is interesting enough for walking around for a hour or two, then have lunch, then walk round the other way. That’s about it. Done it.

But Nimes, Uzes, the Pont du Gard and drifting down river in a canoe from Collias were all a lot more interesting for us.

Been there, done that too. The market in Uzes is one of the best around - with such a variety of things, from French and ethnic foods to local textiles, lavender, baskets, Lagioule knives, local Provencal pottery and there are some great choices of restaurant.

Collias has a nice site - Le Barralet, riverside, with shady pitches, a pebble beach, water deep enough to canoe, and some rapids if the water level is right. The Pont du Gard can be canoed up to if the water level is OK but other times it may be too fast or too low so there is too much carrying. Nimes - well we had one of our best trips there when we took David's 90 year old mum to 'the South of France please' for her first holiday 'Abroad. We had such a fantastic holiday visiting Nimes, seeing all the Roman sites and watching them set up for Aida, the Ardeche seeing the gorge and the Pont d'Arc, having lunch in a favourite restaurant in Vallon, then down to Avignon. Avignon (she made me photoshop her two sticks out of a photo at the Palace du Papes, St Remy de Provence on market day, where she was serenaded by two street musicians who sang Happy Birthday, and into the Camargue where we saw a white Camargue horse giving birth. Then on to the Med to a Spa hotel where we were spoiled, saw a beautiful sunset and the following morning she dipped her toes in the Med. Beautiful memories. The diary of that holiday was one of her most treasured possessions and shown to every visitor, or in her latter years every member of the nursing and medical professions she met.
