Just a heads up for anyone planning to use the A28 from W of Rouen to N of Tours and vice versa -ie if you're using the Tunnel or LeHavre to Tours and points beyond.

Toll charge is over 50 euro - over 50% of our autoroute tolls on a recent visit to England from home in the Dordogne - out via Le Havre (never again) and returning via St Malo.

That's driving a bog standard Berlingo car - not a motorhome, not towing.

Thankfully trailers & caravans under 2m height, go free on the French toll roads.

Still good value imho, but for MH & regular Caravan travellers, maybe not so much.

We last went on the French Toll autoroutes back in 2019, Dunkerque down to Frejus & back, compared to UK motorways the travelling was a dream, some stretches along the Eastern route we hardly got to see any other vehicles, travelling mid day, mid week in June, and of course using a Telepeage Tag, heaven !

We go that way from Dieppe to our caravan at Airvaux. I guess that we shall just have to suck it up!

Oh the smugness of travelling on the autoroute pulling a Trigano Silver, which was specifically designed to be 1.98metres when the roof was down.

This is probably what I miss the most

Another example…tolls from Calais to Frejus and back again for car plus caravan - about 350 euros.

There is an alternative that follows the A28 quite closely and looks really straight and easy on the map. We tried it once. Roundabout after roundabout after roundabout - started to lose the will to live. Never again just pay the toll now.

Non toll alternative is Rouen N154 Chartres then N10 to Tours. Thats the way I would go. If you are retired & not in a hurry then avoid most tolls. We will be going Dieppe to near Perpignan in a couple of weeks. Very little toll we spend.

I generally get near to Orleans & cant face that 20euro toll car caravan to Vierzon & plough on straight through Orleans round ring road & down old N20. Probably do a bit of toll on the otherwise slow bit Toulouse to halfway to Carcassonne & then back on the scenic route.

Beats being cut up on the autoroute by truck drivers who have not slept since leaving Latvia.

A good many years since we paid tolls in France, as we've been in a LWB Landrover in more recent years, with best will in the world we weren't going anywhere in a hurry so couldn't take advantage of the higher speed limits, so really not with any reluctance we just leisurely ambled our way along the toll free routes. We always plan the journey time into our schedule, so the whole journey is very relaxed through the often lovely French countryside. Last trip, couple of years back, was in my car, but we still took the free 'scenic' route, we've just got into the mindset of enjoy the ride and relax, more to life than being a bat out hell trying to race everywhere at fastest speed possible, especially in France where life seems more chilled than in UK.

Fair do's, our journeys were only 120 miles, couple of hours or so, so largely plenty of time to play with. Maybe if a much longer journey, may have to take account of distance/time achievable in a driving day, but kind of got used to enjoying the non-motorway routes over the years and think I'd still try and take advantage of the 'free' routes and enjoy the journey and scenery as much as possible. The toll fees now are even more of an incentive to 'go scenic'!

This year's trip to France got delayed, then cancelled outright, had a few variations on our normal routine trip, and we may have considered toll roads had we got to route planning stage, but will certainly take a close look at toll fees for future trips, just in case we're tempted!

How I mostly see it is that the French don’t pay road tax for their cars so they have at least £160pa in their pockets to pay tolls. I have to pay road tax on my car so why should I pay even more to drive it in France ? Plenty of good non toll roads so the only time I pay is the odd few euros occasionally to avoid any really slow bits.

For example Calais-Dordogne can easily be done toll free without much delay.

50 euro one way from N of Tours to joining the A13 SW of Rouen on route to Le Havre. Not going that way again - and going for the overnight boat the drive into Le Havre is more or less straight into the setting sun.

Returned to our home in France via St Malo.

For some of us tolls are the way to go whether we like it or not :(
The return cost of our annual drive to the south of France amounts to just over £220 - this includes any autoroutes used during the stay.
Last year our destination was near Marseille and this year will be south of Perpignan near the Spanish border so road toll spend will be similar.
We still work meaning reaching our destination as quickly as possible is important to us so we need to factor road tolls into our budget.
Can't wait for retirement when time pressures are no longer a concern to us !!

When we were working, we paid the tolls to speed up the journey. Since we retired we don't have the same time restraint, nor ultimate destination, so quite often do alternate days, toll/non toll. It can take us a week to get to the Med, but don't always go that far these days, having been many times in years gone by.

We originally would go toll free, but the mixture of roundabouts and arthritis drove us to use the motorways or the poshed up N roads

We're usually in a hurry so its toll roads for us to get the miles under our belts. Are tolls in general shooting up in price? (Need to do some research on ViaMichelin !)
