I'm looking for suggestions please. We have booked a very cheap trip to Barcelona in January for our 45th wedding anniversary. Due to OH's medical conditions over the past year or so, I am struggling to get quotes, although he is fit to travel. I have just had one for £1100 which is twice the cost of the break, but the cheapest that could be found. No quotes at all for annual insurance.
I have no qualms about medical issues, but I am concerned that one of us could slip and do an injury. Are there any insurance companies which provide accident cover only? We have GHIC cards.
Given the cost of the break, we would prefer to cover the cost of any cancellation ourselves, and are only taking hand luggage, so we really don't need all those bits.

Have a look at any insurance offered by your carrier.
We had the same problem with the eye watering amounts that commercial companies required for over 80s with medical history.
Eurotunnel did it for £740 compared with the lowest commercial rate of over £2000. I have heard that airlines do something similar
Thanks folks. I have spent most of the day researching this. Finally, I tried LV as I have my car insured through them. Just what I wanted, with 15% discount as I am an existing customer. They do a reasonably priced policy which doesn't cover existing conditions and we were able to exclude baggage too. I could even upgrade it to an annual policy. It suits us fine, as we have no worries about OH's health and are only concerned about unforeseen slips, trips etc.
Thanks for the suggestions.

We use LV too. I just hope we never have to make a claim!

I guess everyone is in that boat! However, I'd rather make a claim and lose a few hundred, than do so and lose thousands if it is rejected. We have no intention of going beyond Europe and reckon we can make a dash for home if Nick's health deteriorates, but we see no reason why it should. Just so long as we are covered for unforeseen accidents that's fine by us.

Is it not the case that an undeclared condition means you would not be able to claim for anything related to it ... but OK for all else ... if you have (say) a dickie heart, but slipped and broke an ankle ... then that would be covered?
Remember that loss adjusters' role is to minimise costs for the underwriter, not to be kind to the policy holder. Any loophole which can prevent payment is used. It would be argued that your "dickie" caused you to fall and therefore break leg. That is why I like Eurotunnels' insurance because there is no need for medical history

Another argument is if you need surgery for a broken ankle, your ‘dickie heart’ makes you more of an anaesthetic risk with potential consequences which you may not be covered for

I'm OK with no conditions, other than a single tablet for blood pressure. On the other hand, OH has a list as long as your arm. It's either this, or not being able to travel (we don't use Eurotunnel these days and DFDS refused to cover us even before the problems of the last year). We will take our chance I think.

There seems to be a deal of variation between what insurers require you to declare. In a conversation with Staysure, when asked to declare ‘everything’, I somewhat sarcastically said - what, even my husband’s Athlete's Foot? Yes. And my HRT? Yes. Neither needs to be declared for us to be regular blood donors, and that process is pretty strictly screened.
I turn 70 next year, and the number of days in any one trip reduces greatly enough to impact on my annual visit to my sister in NZ. Time to start shopping around again, I think!
Definitely shop around. I was 78 when we went to NZ for 8 weeks and I had a number of medical issues. Having looked on line, I then telephoned the insurance company to make sure. They seemed quite happy. Even travelling via USA was not a problem.
just done 5 quotes for multi trip annual cover for two both aged 69 one with multiple conditions.
travel for you,= £1535 ltd 40 days each trip
allclear= £1082 50 days each trip
avanti= £763, 35 days each, one trip could be increased to 55 days extra cost
ltd to 180 days in policy life.
virgin money basic= £500, 35 days any one trip.
virgin money gold= £823 ltd to 94 days per trip
another company actually stopped mid quote when I declared stents
all of these companies were very keen to stress they covered all present medical conditions as long as they were declared unlike some cheaper companies. Two offered a discount if i excluded Spain and potugal reason given spain and portugal now the most expensive for treatment in europe.
(this has not been my experiance using ehic or ghic card )
