The sticker can only be obtained by vehicle owner.
Technically, that's not strictly true, and not meaning to be pedantic, but more to clarify for anyone reading this thread...
I have a company car, on a contract hire from VW. Obviously they are "The owner", but equally obvious is that they won't spend time/effort/4€ on obtaining the sticker and forwarding it on to me.
However, along with forwarding a form that confirms their permission for me to take "their" car abroad, they are also happy to forward a copy of the V5 (in pdf form) to me, for me to then apply for the Crit'Air sticker, in the same way as any vehicle owner.
They (VW) do of course keep hold of the original V5 throughout the contract hire period.

Nah, I'm just going to sick it straight onto the windscreen. Might make me feel all continental.
And when your windscreen cracks and requires replacing, will you be using the phrase "Excuse my French"!!!

Plus it's not needed for the other 49 weeks of the year...
I can concur with Mucker, re the company car thing, as my firm also uses VW Leasing, and I have to say that they are very good at getting stuff like the V5 and European travel pack over to drivers in quick time.
Only had the car a blooming year, and now find that we are being TUPE'd over to another firm in July, and the cars will be Mazda no idea what model though, so bang goes my VW tow bar and roof rack. not to mention my Crit Aire sticker!
Can I ask what info I need for the crit air sticker? Is it enough just to scan the v5 document and the French work out which one I need or should there be the information on the v5? Been on the French site but it says info is in V9 and can't find it on mine. Have a Peugeot 5008 2012 reg. Thanks for any help.

The page you need is the one with the vin nos and euro 5 6 details etc.Scan it and reduce it to required size.
If you don't complete the form it probably will not work, giving error message.

I finally got this pain in the a*** form completed, paid (using my Santander Zero CC to avoid a Euro Transaction Fee). I have an acknowledgment email so hopefully the certificate will be forthcoming.
I had to scroll back month by month to get to November 2015 in my date of Registration box ( presumably the form doesn’t like iOS devices). Surely the form should accept an iPhone photo since they are widely used devices. The compression link was handy Stuart thanks. I saved the compressed photo to my images and was able to link that photo.
When it’s such a faff to get the sticker, and only a small percentage of UK travellers appear to be aware of the need, will non-French Nationals be treated gently? Anyway it’s peace of mind.
I see Halfords still flogging unnecessary alco test gear.

Just got around to doing mine.
The very thoughtful bods at VW Finance were good enough to send the V5 (to me) as a pdf at just 61kb, so no compression required! Just attached direct to the application form and Bob est ton oncle, as they say.
Next job is to find a suitable Ye olde Tax Disc holder, as I don't fancy sticking it direct to the windscreen. Anybody know whether these stickers are a similar diameter to our old tax discs? Anyone else bothered to do this?
Just received my sticker. I am planning same procedure but think it will have to be stuck to a piece of clear film first and then put in old tax disc holder. Anyone else done this?
You’d also think they would do better than “ this certificate must be stuck in a legible way from the outside of your vehicle. Instructions are on the backside of this letter” - Who authorises these things?
Ah Yes, I left the transparent film in place, and cut out the disc, so no sticking involved.
It's slightly smaller than the Tax disc holder, so being picky, I've used a small amount of blue tack to hold in central.
Anyone with more sense than me will of course, measure the respective diameters, before cutting it out!
