"And Ģ1,200 pounds??? Do any of you ever carry that around with you on holiday? "

I do when Im claiming on my holiday insurance!!

Actually it was on the news again today. France, Spain Netherlands, and Italy are all investigating and taking this seriously.

They had an anaesthetist on. Its a mystery to em which gas they are using.

Ether was ruled out as too hard to administer and leaves traces in the van. So was chloroform. Nitrogen puts you in a coma not too sleep and gives brain damage, and the gas they used in the Russian hostage raid in Moscow killed one in 7. There have been no fatalities in any of these.

Its not just ( or even mainly) caravans, apparently,. its been happening with lorry drivers for years.

"I don't know if this particular story is true or not. But it is possible that the couple chose to get their Euro's on the Ferry instead of using cash machines abroad"

I think Im picking up the cynic bug, ..... but I always assumed it was a good way of taking tax effective "cash in hand" earnings away to ones holiday retreat!

Good grief......

Who believes a bloke that wears Red trousers!!!

He looked as if he was still 'gassed' while sitting on his sofa at home.

Load of tosh.

I have posted this before, but it obviously bears repeating as the  alarmist reports rear their heads again.

I make no apologies for the blatant plagiarism but offer my thanks to Mr Kirby whoever he is.

Gassing people in Caravans:

It's a response to a letter from Mr. Brian Kirby of O&A forums addressed to the Royal College of Anaethetists.

"Since this debate rattles on from time to time, with much deliberation over how and what, I thought I'd try to get an expert view on the feasibility of using narcotic gases to knock out the occupants of motorhomes/caravans.

Since they do this all the time, so to speak, I thought I'd ask the Royal College of Anaesthetists. Somewhat to my surprise, they provided the following reply. Interesting isn't it? Sleep tight folks!

Dear Mr Kirby,

Thank you for your enquiry. I would like to inform you that you are not the first enquirer with this question. Professor Hatch, our Clinical Advisor, has given the following previous comments:

"I can give you a categorical assurance that it would not be possible to render someone unconscious with ether without their knowledge, even if they were sleeping at the time. Ether is an extremely pungent agent and a relatively weak anaesthetic by modern standards and has a very irritant affect of the air passages, causing coughing and sometimes vomiting. It takes some time to reach unconsciousness, even if given by direct application to the face on a rag, and the concentration needed by some sort of spray into a room would be enormous. The smell hangs around for days and would be obvious to anyone the next day.

There are much more powerful agents around now, some of which are almost odourless. However, these would be unlikely to be able to achieve the effect you describe, and the cost would be huge enough to deter any thief unless he was after the crown jewels. The only practicable agent is probably the one used by the Russians in the Moscow siege - I advised the BBC on their programme about this. The general feeling is that they used an agent which is not available outside the KGB!

Finally, unsupervised anaesthesia, which is what we are really talking about is very dangerous. In the Moscow siege about 20% of victims died from asphyxia, because their airways were unprotected. If the reports you talk about are true I would have expected a significant number of deaths or cases of serious brain damage to have been reported."

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Regards,

Ms Shirani Nadarajah

A spokesman for the Royal College of Surgeons speaking on radio 5 yesterday said that IF there was such a gas then the NHS would use it as there would be no need to have an anaesthetist in attendance. On the programme several gasses were discussed and all discounted for various reasons. I think that it is more to do with being overtired or alcohol. Why people spend thousands of pounds on a caravan or m/home then stop on service areas to save the Ģ10 or so site fee is beyond me.

I don't see how it helps them with their insurance claim to say they were gassed- am I missing something?  I mean, whether they were gassed or not, there would have been signs of forced entry, wouldn't there?  Reckon they just fell asleep without remembering to lock up, meself!

But there are just so many places in a caravan or motorhome to hide money and anything else of value - surely no one leaves it just 'lying about'.

We have a safe in the van, bolted to the floor. Have had for years. OK, the van can be stolen and the safe with it, but at least it should stop the opportunist thief. There is no way anyone could take the safe out without a hell of a lot of trouble and noise. They would also have to find it first.
It would be interesting to hear what the insurance companies' view is on claims like these though, given the previous eloquent account by Shirani Nadarajah on the subject of anaesthesia and gassing.

What a doubting World we live in.........Recent report in newspaper, so it must be true........Any Motorhome/Caravan owners been robbed by them yet. I bet they have

ISRAELI MAN MUGGED BY TWO SMALL ALIENS

Although the saucers failed to meet last week's date for a Tel Aviv rendezvous, the Israeli newspaper Maariv yesterday reported yet another bizarre alien encounter in the West Bank.

Daoud Ahmad said he was asleep in his bedroom at the Nur-a-Shamat camp on the West Bank. "I awoke at one in the morning feeling threatened," he said. "I tried to get out of bed, but two creatures jumped on me and beat me up."

Ahmad described the intruders as "60 centimeters (2 feet) in height, each had only one eye," with large heads and a single stripe of hair worn Mohawk-style across their bald heads. "They were very strong," he added, "They wore black leather clothes...After they beat me, I lost consciousness [gas?]."

After the altercation, Ahmad was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

According to Palestinian TV, neighbors heard the ruckus coming from the bedroom but saw no one emerge from the house afterward.

I actually met some people this year who had around Ģ600 in Euros taken from their caravan while they slept in an Aire last year, there was nothing else taken. They only intended to stay a short while but slept a full 12 hours from 9pm until 9am next day which they never do, Cheryl even said she'd woken up, then sat up and thought she could see a small figure in the caravan but just laid back down and went to sleep. They only realised they'd been robbed when they found their child's clothes on the A frame, obviously they'd not put them there so it had to be someone else. The local police said they only steal money as it's the only thing they can use.
