I am interested to hear of this route. How would it be for towing. We have a Bailey Senator Arizona (7.2m/1500Kg) and will be towing with by then hopefully a new-to-us 4x4. What are the roads like on this route re width, surface, tunnels, steepness, etc.

Hi Tim & Cary, The route is fine for HGVs so I don't imagine you would have a problem, but I don't really know because I have never towed a caravan. I'm fairly sure I've seen caravans on the route.
All the roads are main roads like the French N roads but going over the mountains they can sometimes get a bit twisty, there are no really steep climbs. My 1.9 diesel M/H has no trouble.
Thanks very much for all your useful info. I've made a separate file up and put it all in there with all other useful info I can get. It is very useful to know that these roads are ok to travel on with a M/H.
hi, i am a commercial driver who has a lot of experience to italy. for lake garda i would definately go either swiss to como or austria via the brenner. bear in mind that swiss can get extremely busy in the summer months not so much with trucks as the factories all tend to close for the summer months in southern europe but with the tourist traffic. also you will have to pay tax to transit swiss. also fill up with diesel in luxembourg and jerry cans as the saving is a lot (about 30p a litre i think)

Hi Ina, When you leave Germany heading for Reutte take the B179, then the B189 > B171 to Landeck. Turn onto B180 to Nauders, cross into Italy on the S40 then S38 to Bolzano. All good roads. If a road was closed through roadworks and IF you were diverted onto a motorway you would not be expected to pay the toll.
Phil.
Hi Phil,
Your route seems to take the Lermoos tunnel, is this toll free as well. I will be traveling to Siena via Germany with my VW T5 and caravan, so I have followed your route with interest. A few years ago I did a similar trip on my motorcycle and camped at Imst after crossing using the small Hanntenjog pass which finishes in Imst. I cant seem to find out if the Lermoos is tolled or not.
The Lemoos Tunnel does not have a Toll To where you are going with a car and caravan in Italy I would go Belgium, Germany , Austria ,.and over the Brenner. The toll Vignette for the Austrian autobahn is just over £6 for 10 days and useful if you stop near Innsbruck en route a wonderful area to explore If you like to email me I can give you the route we take with ACSI Camping Card sites en route. Email me your email address to dvphillips14 at hotmail.com and I will send by return.
