Hi Lesley,

we drove to zante last august and tried to get in many campsites on the east coast (on the adriatic from between rimini and ancona) we must have tried at least 15 campsites without luck, we then started to try hotels and got in after about 7 or 8 tries.

I'm not sure if it will be different where you are going, but I wish you good luck.

We are off to Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and possibly Croatia (I'm trying to find out more about that one)

Regards,

Russ

Hi Lesley

It is I - Tim that often posts on here.

We went to Italy in 2006 and 2007. We are both teachers and so have to go in peak season, ie, late July and August. We, also, have a long caravan (7.2 metres) and that is considered very long by Italian standards!!

In 2006 we stayed at Camping La Riva near Lake Como. We did book that in advance. We then travelled on to Camping Cavallino on the Jesolo Peninsula. We did not book that VERY PLEASANT site we just phoned up on the day we were travelling south and they said they had room. We had a lovely pitch near to the Adriatic beach and travelled into Venice on several different days via the boat from Punto Sabioni. We drove the 3 or 4 miles to the boat and parked in one of the severals guarded carparks near to the boat terminal.

The Jesolo Peninsula is lined with campsites along the beach and you have no problem finding one to suit you WITHOUT booking.

Last Summer we travelled down to Camping Roma Sporting Flash on Lake Bracciano near to Rome. Again we did not book but just phoned the day before we arrived. Lots of free pitches available. We then travelled back up to Camping Riva San Pietro on Lake Iseo for the second half of our hols. We phoned several sites on Lake Iseo before we found San Pietro. We got a super pitch near to the Lake side with views to die for.

I've posted reviews on all 4 sites in the campsite review section of this site - just search by their names.

We love Italy and hope to go again this summer. We really enjoyed Venice although we are not great city lovers generally. Did NOT find it smelly although we were there in mid-August and it WAS hot.

Hope this helps. Please post again if the reviews don't answer your questions. If I remember rightly my review of Cavallino includes ideas, etc, regarding visiting Venice.

Best wishes

Tim

Yes I just checked

My review is there under Camping Village Cavallino in "Other Overseas" section of Campsite search - It's on the second "page" of that section and it does include my tips for visiting Venice. Hope this helps.

Hi Tim

Also a teacher so doing in peak season. Was just worried about getting there and not finding a site with room, but it seems that it won't be a problem.

Haven't read your reviews yet - will do that in a mo.

Thanks

Lesley

Has anyone camped along the Amalfi Coast? we were there, staying in an apartment last October and it was lovely. Would prefer to be at the eastern end as we didn't make it to Vesuvius or Hurculaneum; we did go to Pompei. I can only remember seeing camp sites nearer to Sorrento though. I don't think we would take the caravan along that coast road!

We stopped at http://www.villaggionettuno.it/ a few years ago. We were the first British Caravan to stay there in the 30 years it had been open.
No marked pitches. I see from the pics of the site they have a new toilet block from when we were there.   Not all singing/dancing site.   May be a bit informal for some but we had a superb 2 weeks there.
We have used www.santafortunata.eu in recent years.

Hi

We went to italy for 3 weeks last year first 2 in a place called Lido di Spina which is on the adriatic so good for venice which by the way didnt smell as bad as described in August although be prepared for millions of people then the last week we spent in a place called fiano romano which is in the hills above rome both were booked through vaconsoleil much cheaper than eurocamp and alike. We towed a trailer and i dont think we saw any other Brits until we got to rome site which is run by a very friendly Australian lady whos name escapes me but they run a daily bus into rome really cheap nice pool and it wasnt too busy unlike Lido di spina which was packed with just about every other nationalty apart from brits .If your not staying in a typical tourist site you need a bit of the lingo . On the whole id go back tomorrow without my kids if i could just to visit those 2 cities again and not in august when they are extremely busy and HOT

Hi Lesley,

Stayed at Fusina in May last year and had no problems. You cant book touring pitches but there were reserved pitches for groups when we were there.

It wont be everyones cup of tea as it attracts a lot of young people and can be noisy when the bar and disco are going flat out.It suited us because we have 2 dogs.It is sheltered by trees so the heat is less of a problem. The facilities are OK and it is a friendly place. The pitches are not reserved so you get what you can find. So in high season it could be squeeze.

They take all kinds of outfits especially water sports fans. The site is actually on the lagoon so you can launch from there. There is a ferry into Venice outside the site(100metres) and they sell the tickets. The ambience of the place is OK but as has been said it is in a working dock /industrial area so you have to drive past factories to get to the site or to the shops.Large merchant ships sail past the site everyday.

A club type site(which i like) it is definitely not but i liked the friendliness of the place. It reminded me of old time camping when people just got along together and ignored the children/dogs/noise/crowding(sometimes).I must admit the only ones who werent too keen were the few Brits i spoke to.

I will be going back there.

Terry

PS Venice is a fantastic place. If you want to look for smells/dog poo/litter etc you will find it but it was no worse than the UK in my opinion.
