I've just opened a Nationwide Flex account and will get the child benefit and tax credits paid into it (when I remember!), so £100 per month in holiday fund straightaway

We have used nationwide and have a nationwide account, but I thought that nationwide had changed their free foreign withdrawals so that they were in line with other banks/building societies.

Simon Calder was on Radio 4 today. He still recommends it because there is still no charge in the eurozone, and their exchange rate is the normal Visa rate, ie as good as it gets.

You can get the N/W credit card without opening an account with them, I think. But its worth opening their current account because their debit card is the cheapest means of drawing cash from European ATMs

There are a few other credit cards that dont charge the 2.75% loading for European use. Post Office & SAGA cards for example.

I have just spoken to Nationwide customer services to clarify the new charge and it doesn't affect europe, so looks like I will have to apply for one.

Does anyone know what the changes mean if you use your card in the USA please? We use ours for camping holidays in Europe and visiting family in the US. Have always had excellent rates in both places with Nationwide.

You will be charged if you use the cards outside of Europe, Post Office card has no charges worldwide so I use that.

A work colleague got a Nationwide card to go to Florida, then they changed the rules, so off he went to the PO!!!

Thanks, I must say, the NW card always has such a brilliant exchange rate that I suspect it will still be better than other cards, even with the 1 percent charge.

Charges only apply in some countries. There is a list of countries on their website where you can check whether or not there is a charge.

There are no charges in Europe.
