If you have a specific person to look up in a war cemetery, go to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site www.cwgc.org and use the excellent search facility there.
On arrival at a cemetery, you will find the registers and visitors book behind a little bronze door set into a wall somewhere near the entrance (usually).

A few other ideas (market days etc) on

The campsite at Verdun is excellent, 10-15 minute walk into town. Camper vans were also parked in the big car park by the fort every night!

Dont know of any campsites but we stayed at Val de Trie which is miles away. we went to Albert which was pretty much at the centre of it all and there is an excellent underground museum there.  Then we drove a couple of miles to The Newfoundland battlefield at Beaumont Hamel and I am glad I did. The site is quite overpowering with the "danger tree" and an area that is roped of an designated as dangerous as there are still unexploded shells .  I will never forget that trip. I also went to Theipsval which is a massive memorial but a lot of the fighting there was at nearby farms and in fields. The Newfoundland park was for me the most poignant place. I would say head towards Albert and you cannot go wrong.

In Albert, the Musee Somme 1916, alongside the huge church int he centre, gives an atmospheric view of the battle.  The Albert area, as said above, is one of the epicentres of Somme battlefield touring; don't miss the "Lochnagar Crater" near La Boisselle. It is signposted off to the south of the Albert-to-Bapaume road as "La Grande Mine".  It is a jaw-droppingly vast crater, resulting from one of the chain of underground mines that were exploded along the front-line on 1 July 1916, first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Thiepval has an interesting little visitor centre, with good explanations of that part of British action on the Somme.  There is a good visitor centre at Beaumont Hamel (Newfoundland site, mentioned several times above) that spells out how the Newfoundlanders formed their own regiment to come over and fight, and the huge death and disablement rate among those who did.

For an overall explanation of the build-up to the Great War you cannot do better than the Historial de la Grande Guerre museum, at Peronne.

If you go to up Ypres, you will of course know about the incredibly moving daily 8pm ceremony under the Menin Gate, when the Last Post is played.

Never leave money, important documents or valuables in the vehicle when you park at war sites; sadly these are sometimes targeted by thieves.

I can't offer very much in the way of campsites. We stayed at Drancourt

The site was fine, but it wasn't the most accessible place for visiting. I would add to the comments on Beaumont Hammel and Newfoundland Park.

The stark white gravestones are very impressive and the number of them is just mindblowing. Everywhere you go there is a Commonwealth war grave, ranging from relatively small ones to huge ones with thousands of grave stones. It certainly helped me get my head round some of the numbers - they are so big that they are pretty meaningless until you recognise every grave represents a person.

We looked for local connections. Groups of men were recruited from the same place and often served together. A particularly bad loss could devastate a whole community. Round Newfoundland Park the Gordon Highlanders which was our local regiment were heavily involved and finding out the history of their involvement and seeing some of the graves also helped bring it home.

Finally the Green Fields of France by Eric Bogle is an incredibly poignant song which really brings home some of the waste of life. There are some versions on Youtube (none by him unfortunately) and the lyrics are very easy to find from google.

We visited the Albert, Thiepval area one year. We stayed at a hotel in Cambrai, as we had been on a 4 x4 trip in the area, which took us to the battlefields around Cambrai.

Being 50 somethings, our grand parents(sadly no longer alive)and parents could recall both world wars. Both my Grandfathers served in WW!, both were lucky enough to survive. One had a stiff leg (shrapnel) the other chest problems (he was gassed). Both would rarely talk about their experiences.

So for us it was quite moving to see the graves. (Possibly also because we both served in the RAF) to me it reinforces the debt we owe our previous generations. Worth the trip.

Unfortunately our service persomnnel are still losing their lives in conflicts today.

there is an aire for motorhomes in caudry - basically its a hotel car park but they are happy for vans to overnite, we have done it several times as my great grandad died there in 1917 and his grave is in caudry. Caudry is close to cambrai, and not too far from all the memorials mentioned above. it can sometimes be more poignant not to just go to the big memorials, we often stop at little out of the way cemeterys. they are rarely visited, so i think it shows that someone still cares when we go.

Just take lots and lots of paper hankies when you visit these sites. You'll need them!

Best of luck,

Graham
