Just to put the 'Cat amongst the Pigeons' so to speak, from a couple of web sites:-

"It was true until Tuesday when the minister for transport put the date back to 1 October. The interview on Wednesday on TV (France 2) was great, typically French. Basically the government made the decision to implement the new rules but when questioned, the minister forgot to tell the manufacturers of warning triangles."

"With every car part and DIY shop out of stock of triangles and gilets, the authorities have let it be known that the new regulations still become law as of the 1st July 2008, but until the 1st October 2008 if you're stopped by police, you will be given a verbal warning to comply. After the 1st October 2008 it's 135 euro fine, no quibbling!"

Just checked the AA web-site. It mentions Oct 1st. It also says that they have not decided if this applies to foreign registered cars.

Try telling that to a Gendarme whos trying to nick you, just have all the gear, makes sense, I should add that in some countries, certainly Spain & Italy if you have a rear mounted bike rack on campervan/car/caravan you need a square red/white marker board tied to the back, Fiamma do 'em, buy 'em in any uk caravan shop.

Don't forget too, that it's €135 for not having a gilet, AND another if you don't have the warning triangle(s).

Our SuperU's selling both just now as a special offer.

As I posted elsewhere, you don't need to worry excessively if you don't have them with you after July 1st. The fine comes into play on October 1st, after a 3-month period of grace.

At the end of the day though, this is all about common sense and the safety of those you love.

I bought 4 High-vis jackets for £7 today from our big Tescos, thanks to a heads up from someone on here - 2 adults, 2 childrens - we shall look like a right bunch of (very safe and legal) spoons!

Much cheaper than anywhere else I've seen.

mmm well I'm a secondary school teacher so we don't have much call for them - although some of the kids do seem to think you are invisible when you try to talk to them so maybe we should have them!

There are two threads on this subject.

Here is a link to the other http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=7&TopicID=153182&PagePosition=1
where I have just put a reply, plus links to the official French site (and the Karl Lagerfeld poster!).
