Thank you so much to all of you that replied and convinced me that yes we should be going ...OH and i talked it to death and eventually decide we would go - hubby went to work the next morning to book the extra 3 days off work  ...and his request was declined.....I am seriously gutted.....i have been playing with dates and websites for the last few days and unfortunately as he is commitmed to working the August B/Hol Monday there is no way we can organise a trip for a week and within our budget as earlier in August is a lot more money...plus i really think it is too far to go for 5 nights.

We are definitley going to go next summer ( i have already booked my fortnight off work) and i wanted to thank everyone who took the time to reply and help us make an informed decision ...even thought it didnt pay off in the end.

What a shame. Enjoy planning for next year. Book the ferry in Oct/Nov to get a decent price.

Yes. We usually have the ferry booked by Christmas for cheaper deals. If you think you want to do a stop-over in France near the channel ports, it would be sensible to book that too. We left it all until Feb this year - didn't know if we would be towing or not.  Couldn't book any stopovers on our dates. So we are overnighting a couple of hours down the Autoroute at a place that doesn't do food. PAIN!!!!!!!

It is massive fun researching and planning foreign camping. And part of the fun of booking early is that you start to feel that you are on your way.

Alan

It is a good idea to have a look at ferry offers in October - usually there are some tempting 'book now' offers.   We usually look in early October, and over previous years have got some real bargains.

We don't book campsites at all - but we travel in May/June, and then again at the end of August/beginning of September, and we've never had a problem getting on a site.  It can be different, though, if you're holidaying during peak season, and want a particular site.  However, outside this season, you can get some really good discounts with Camping Cheques, Touring Cheques, or an ACSI card - and just be free to move on if you don't like an area or a campsite.

Thanks Alan & Val

I'll def keep an eye out for ferries over the next few months, i think being a bit of a control freak i would prefer to book a site in advance - especially travelling with a child i really couldnt take the risk of spending any longer in the car than necessarry or ending up somewhere that didnt have all the facilites we'd like - thanks again x
