Thanks Andrea hope the trauma of the journey didn't spoil your holiday and most importantly that no one was hurt.

Italy is beginning to reappear on the agenda it would seem.

Are the Italian motorways equipped / safe for stopovers ?

We have been travelling with the van to Italy annually for the past 15 years or so only going as far south as Sorrento as yet.
Sites vary in pitch size and quality. As a general guide, try to find out which sites the Dutch are going to. They tend to be the sites with the larger pitches and are clean and well tended.
The Italian motorways are not really suitable for overnighting.   But there again, there are only about 250 miles between sites.

Enjoy yourself.   Whatever you're doing!!

We have just returned from Italy, although we cheated a bit: flew to Venice and hired a mobile home on the site, as we didn't have enough time to make the drive worthwhile. We stayed near Caorle at a site called Pra Delle Torri (not sure of spelling -  they have a website). Site was huge, with lots of mobiles, a hotel and bungalows and large selection of shops and other facilities!  Not everybody's cup of tea, but the camping pitches were of a very good size. There were different areas ranging from the more 'rustic' under the pine trees, to the more 'manicured' pitches nearer the facilities - all had plenty of space.

From Caorle you can drive past Lido de Jesolo (wouldn't choose this as a holiday destination myself - purpose built and lacks soul) to the Venice ferry, where you can park your car for 7 Euros a day. 12 Euros buys you a return ticket to Venice with unlimited travel on the waterbuses while you are there. Venice is an absolute must see! One downside of the area is the mosquito population - there is no escape!

we returned from Lake Garda yesterday. Pitches are on average smaller - about 90sqm max but the Italians and their hospitality, weather, laid back attitude and excellent service outweighs any disadvantages.

Motorways are busier than France but not as bad as here and they drive better on the motorways than we do.

We had 16 days of hot sun - excellent - didn't even unpack the fleeces, waterproofs etc. We sat out every evening it was so warm.

First time for us in Italy camping but will certainly be going back. It is a long journey - it tooks us 6 hrs from Lake Garda to Conar (boarder of France,Swiss and Germany) and then 7 hours the next day to get to the tunnel. We do have stops though as we have small children.
