I stayed at the town campsite " Camping Municipal" at Chinon. Great value for money. The local swimming pool is 100yds from the site with a discount for campsite users. Just across the river fom a marvelous historical fortress city of Chinon with restaurants cafes access to shops etc. Direct access to the river for fishing / canoeing etc. Good access to the Loire and it's tributaries. I can recomend this site.

Also I can reccomend Camping Du Fierbos, having stayed there also this year. But I felt that there not much other to do in the surrounding area. Other than the campshop there was a car journey / cycle ride > 5Km to the nearst larger shops.

Hi there

We have been to both of the L'etang sites - htey are both very good in differnet ways.  For your purposes with a 2 and 4 year old I think that Camping l'tang in Brissac may be better.  There is a small fishing lake, there are the odd bits of play equipment around the site but the best thing is the playpark literally across the road - it is brilliant for kids of that age - all sorts of great things to do - not really expensive - I think it was about 6 euros each - but you do get a discount for being in the campsite and you can come in and out all day - or take packed lunch.  The bar is also attractive with tables that overlook a good play area - nice to sit and watch the kids - it is sand so you could just take a bucket and spade.  It also has a really nice atmosphere - plenty of Brits - but not in a territorial way.  We went there 2 years ago and we are going back there next year.  However, we are also going back to L'etang de la Breche near Saumur.  I had read may reviews on here and had to see for myself!  It is very different - much bigger and busier, with more organised stuff.  There are also many Brits who have been returning year after year and all know each other so it can get a little noisy when there are new arrivals and people catch up.  There are therefore quite a few older teens who congregate in the bar - well-behaved on the whole - but they do rather dominate the bar in the evening.  Having said that - for older kids (ours are 6 and 9 ) it was perfect as they made friends and we could allow them to roam a little down to the play areas.  The swimming pool is nice too. There is good cycling from both.  We don't have to choose - we are going to both!  I am sure that whatever you decide you will enjoy it - you always have to see for yourself!

Chateau des Marais is good but expensive. The Chateau de Chambord is fab and you can get into the grounds for free..

While you are there go to the Zoo Parc de Beauval at St Aignan - its awesome. Spoils other zoos.
