Sorry too much "allo, allo" perhaps - not

"We, alos, visited the town's municipal pool which is an easy work from the campsite."
but
We, also, visited the town's municipal pool which is an easy walk from the campsite.

I've put a review on the "campsite search" section.

Just to agree with the general view, Beaumont sur Sarthe is a very nice site, good location, easily found.

Camping Le vieux Moulin - Neuville sur sarthe is abour 5 kms N of Le Mans.  Nice location - large pitches and quite cheap.  Clean toilet block and handy for Auchan supermarket and some eateries.  Boulangerie is in village also bar and boucherie - about 10 minutes stroll.

Hi there

Thanks for all your suggestions.

We are going in August, so will definitely want to book.  We know that 'pre-booking' is not typical in France, but we can't bear the stress of wondering if we can get in at a chosen site.

We prefer if we can choose our exact pitch if possible (though not when it is only for a short stopover - LOL!)  Mr Ulti-mates has been known to study sites on Google Earth, just so he can see what the access is like!!

Freud would probably have something to say about us and our childhood experiences, but hey-ho, that's the way we are!!

RE Val du Sarth at Beaumnot Sur Sarthe. Alan Rogers "France" says reservations not normally necessary and that has been our experience on the 2 occasions we have stayed there - absolutely loads of free pitches. We are teachers and we HAVE to go in the peak season. We phone ahead from on the day we hope to arrive. In 11 years of peak season touring I can never remember being turned away from a French campsite because it was full

I understand your concerns but on the other hand one of the problems of pre-booking is one is delayed and do not make it - especially if there is a deposit involved.

We went to Val du Sarthe at Beaumont and can't praise it enough! It is a gem of a site - lovely and peaceful, not too far to walk from the little town. The site is situated in a pretty area next to the river and fields of grazing cows. We cycled into the town to the Super U quite easily. Our boys enjoyed the space to play at the site - basketball net, volleyball net, table tennis table, climbing frame and swings and an indoor play room with table tennis and table soccer. The facilities were the cleanest that I've ever seen - and I've been to LOTS of french sites!! Madame Triffault is very friendly and welcoming. We went there on July 27th and August 11th and there were still plenty of pitches free. Best of all is that we only paid 11 euros for our pitch (without electricity) and 14 euros (with electricity). We would definately go again and has made us think more about using municipal sites as more than just a stop over!

another vote for Val du Sarthe from us too. We did book for our overnight mid August this year and managed to get a riverside pitch turning up at 5pm. The site did almost fill up later and yes I agree the facilities were some of the cleanest I've ever seen.

Another vote for Val du Sarthe, we booked via email but there was plenty of spare pitches anyway, 14euro/night for pitch, 2 adults and 2 large kids! perfect site, I would maybe stop 2 nights next year just to do more fishing!

As noted above, just watch for the plentyful signs in the village, the streets are narrowish and you get the feeling that its not right but it is!!!

Remember that most municipals have barriers that will close in the evening! and the site will fill up late afternoon onwards (especially now everyone on here knows about it!)

We actually stayed at Chateau de Chanteloup, an excellent one night stopover.

Typically French, a bit quirky, but they made us very welcome. If you get a pitch near the house there is free wi-fi as well!

We were due to stay at the site at du sarthe this year.  In the end we were of the opinion that it was just a tad too far.  This was our first year in France and if we'd got a bit more organised and got an earlier ferry it may well have been achievable.  In the end we ended up in a Municipal site at Berney just under Rouen.  Stayed there only one night, perfectly adequate, with the added bonus of a baker who turned up every morning with literally a boot full of baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolates.  I can't remember how much it was, probably about twenty quid for the four of us.
