Beware....if you enter Switzerland you'll have to get a vignette, this year it was 40 Swiss Francs. So if it is just a matter of going through Switzerland for 1 overnighter, I'd think again, as 40 Francs is a lot of money on top of an overnight hotel or campsite. We went to the Italian Lakes last year, but started off at Lake Levico first, which we travelled to via Germany and Austria (not on the motorway, so didn't have to pay anything there).
Ina,
I presume that you have to pay for a Vignette, regrdless of whether you stay over in Switzerland, or drive straight through?
Thanks,
Jo
Jo
That is correct, unless you avoid the motorways which can be difficult. The vignettes are valid for a year. Don't get to hung up on the cost because if the Switzerland route is the shortest one to your destination it might not be as bad as it seems as you will save fuel. However I would work out all the options.
David
David,
Thanks for your info. I was thinking along the same lines, that Switzerland, being the shortest route and paying vignette, would probably still be the better option versus longer journey and fuel costs.

Hi Pager33,
Just some advice about bookinf for Whitemead, if you want to go in school holidays eg. Easter, Whitweek, Oct half term, you have to book nearly a year in advance, we've booked this october for october 2009 and there were not many pitches left. Having said that if you just want to do a weekend outside these times you can usually get in, I suppose it shows just how good the site really is.
They have now teamed up with PGL adventure holidays and the activities on offer for children is amazing, We never saw our son and his friends this october, He was abseiling, on the climbing wall, zipwire, trapeze, fencing, archery, rifle shooting and playing battlesports, so I'm sure your children would love it.
Anyway take care,
Dawn.
