On our way back from Evian this year, we went for the far cheaper(already bought swiss vignette as we were stayed on the French/Swiss border) and about 1to2 hour longer drive, if you went flat out(but we took 2 days). We went from France, through Switzerland to Basle, into Germany, back into France, Luxembourg(stopped overnight), Belgium(cheap ciggies & baccy for friends) & back into France to Calais.
All motorway, and 12euros in tolls. About 50-60miles longer than the Geneva, Dijon, Troyes, Reims we have done before, but 2 advantages of cheap fuel in Luxembourg & at least 50-60 euros less in tolls.
And I have been equally as mad as Snowy, 2 summers ago we "popped" down to Aosta, decided to go a bit further to Lake Como, & stayed overnight & came back to Evian. This year we "nipped" to Aosta for tea.
If you don't mind driving...it's just got to be done hasn't it!
