You may have a bit of a struggle at toll booths with no adult passenger, obviously the toll machines are on the wrong side of the car. Might be wise to invest in a grabbing stick to take tickets and hand over notes at the toll booth.
On single carriageway roads always remember that if you want to get fuel, pull up at a shop etc DON'T pull over to the other side of the road as you may forget yourself and drive off on the left!
Generally don't panic. The roads are a lot quieter and on dual carriageways lane discipline is usually excellent, although on the rarer 3 lane autoroutes lane discipline does rather go out of the window.
------------- I can remember when this was all fields.

I spend a bit of time on the crossing visualising what I am going to do. Imagine coming off the boat, imagine a left hand junction, then a right hand junction and so on.
Think how you will approach it, how you will indicate, how you will turn. By the time I get there it seems quite natural.
It's good advice about your left-hand mirror - use it all the time. A passenger can obstruct it very readily with maps etc, so not having one gives you an advantage!
I am convinced that sudden changes of plan cause a lot of accidents when you are driving abroad. If my wife shouts that I should have turned off just as I am passing a junction I usually just sail on, much to her annoyance. Better to find somewhere to turn and get there safely than to make a mistake on an unplanned turn.
Again I really like my satnav. I am on my second one (Navman) and it even tells me which lane to take on a motorway in advance of a turn, which is very useful.
Hi
Have just read the replies to your post, just want to say the best bit of advice you have been given is about major towns being the ones that are signposted.
Drove in France for the first time last year and was very apprehensive, beforehand, now don't know what I was worried about, it was a pleasure compared to the M6.
Also in France when the french motorists flash their headlamps they are NOT giving way , they are warning you that they have right of way. Worth remembering when going down a narrow road.
Off to Southern Brittany in August and cant wait

Well i think hats off to you, you are very brace and not because it is a scary experience because hand on heart IT IS NOT, just because I admire what you are doing. Many people would not do it. The route you will tk from Calais to Disney is really straightforward. You are taking the A16 from Calais? or the A1. I drive down to Paris on the A16 all the time and it is quite, great surface, lots of aire's (laybys) and really quite a pleassant experience, especially compared to our nightmare roads. It is a faster and easier transaction to use your credit card at the peage. The first peage you will come to you take a ticket and then at the second peage when you leave to motorway you pay, just hand your card over and its as easy as that. You get use to driving on the right quickly as you go with the flow of traffic. Don't panic, be logical and read the signs. it is a far less stressful experience than driving in the UK and good for you. Once you have madde the decision to do it with your 6 year old alone you are halfway there. Tom TOm a definate - makes life really stress free.
No need to worry, route from Calais to DisneyLand Paris is really easy - done it twice and it's autoroute all the way and as they are toll they are just about empty until you get to the bit around Paris (which is free).
Get a SatNav and it is a breeze
