Have to mention also that in 3500 miles driving only saw one police car while on road not sure if that's the norm or not.

I think the trouble is that you could travel 10000 miles without being stopped but at 10001 you are stopped for something else and they check everything. Bit like the person on here who got fined in Holland because of a problem with towing mirrors. I am sure you are right that the probability of being caught is pretty slim. We would not be discussing this if the Government was brave enough to make  Euro plates the only option as they are in many other countries.
