Have just been quoted £80-£100 for pet passport at our vets. They did also say that depending on the rabies vaccine manufacturer it can last 2-3 years, but they reccomend having it boosted every year.

We've had our dogs to France every year for the last 3 years.  The passports cost £100 per dog in 06. We allowed 10 months before we travelled to allow for blood tests and paperwork etc. The rabies boosters were given in 08 and are due again Sept this year.  Their annual parvo/hardpad boosters are £25 but this part is never checked on their passports and indeed the vet only started filling it in last year.  With the exception of the first year, we carry our own Drontal and Frontline with us and the French vets we have used have always been happy to administer which saves on costs.  Dr Paulus in Eperleque we have used and found quite expensive - I think around 170euro for 4 dogs in 2007.  The cheapest we have used is a vet in S'evigne leveque in the Sarthe, its the next village to Sille Phillipe where Chateau de Chanteloup campsite is - our last stop.  Not sure about those spellings.  Last year he charged 25 euros for 3 dogs. He didn't stamp the health check part at the back of the passports (which I didn't discover until we reached the port, but the people who checked the passports (very thouroughly I might add) at SeaFrance didn't seem worried.  They are most concerned about the worming and flea treatment and the timings of those. I think the further you are from the channel ports the less the vets charge.  Some campsites charge up to 4 euro per night per dog, others charge nothing.  We have not been charged on many campsites which are listed as having a charge.  Our dogs don't have a Nana so its cheaper for us to take them than pay a live-in nanny or put them in kennels, which we wouldn't do in any case.  We get such enjoyment and peace of mind having them with us and they love it so its worth it for us.  Hope this is helpful.  DEFRA website has all the info you will need.

Look forward to seeing the photos!  Mind you, I don't think you'll be in time to do it this year, from what I've read of the timescales involved.

6 months is the standard period quoted by DEFRA and vets. So technically you could book your departure for 5 months 2 weeks and come back after a fortnights hols and everything would be okay.

that's expensive - but think of the joy when you've got your furry friends with you.  We enjoyed camping in France much more last year because we had the dog with us, not least because the French are very dog friendly and they are accepted almost everywhere!
