We found it too much hassle!

Carted the huge dish all the way to Dordogne, messed with it for ages, then gave up and sold it when we got home!

Hi mzzy.

Setting a satellite dish up is like riding a bike, once you have mastered the technique it's easy peasy, there is nothing better after a hard days slog round a French market, or some ancient ruin, than to get back to your pitch, and sit outside with a good bottle of Vin Rouge (3Euro max!), in the evening, and tune into the BBC and watch the weather report for blighty, even in mid July, it's great to see that most of UK is getting more rain than the 100 acre wood, and your pitch in the South of France, is almost akin with the sahara, brings a smile to my face every time.

We caravanned next to someone at Le Boucanet near Grau du Roi, who spent his entire four day stay there messing around with the satellite dish - so that he could watch Look North (regional news programme).  He didn't ever get it set up to his satisfaction, so they moved on.  In the meantime we had a lovely enjoyable holiday.

Hi Val.

I find satellite usefull mostly for the radio stations, especialy since the BBC shut down the BBC World Service on ShortWave Radio for Europe, just leaving the LongWave service, which fades away just past Lyon, but there is somthing quite bizzare about Mr Francais watching Coranation Street an hour later than in the UK, in the Southern Ardeche, whilst sat outside the tent, I know it's wrong but funny all the same.

Andy.

We leave all that behind us - I'm glad to be away from 'The News' to be honest!  TV is banned by mutual consent, and we didn't even have one when our sons were small.  We read loads of books, buy the local Midi Libre and read about interesting local news like the Local Fete des Truffes,  Joutes Nautique in Sete, or the Transhumance de Esperou.  We've had enjoyable days reading about local events, it improves our French no end, and we enjoy visiting the places that many others don't ever find, because we've read about them in a French newspaper.  We also buy French Caravan magazines, so I can quote the latest legislation on towing, or speed limit stickers when I get back!

We're not avid TV watchers at home, either, and have only the standard four channels (we can't even get Channel 5 in our area) - so perhaps that explains it!

I can understand people wanting to watch their favourite programme, but to spend ALL your holiday trying to do so is surely beyond the pale!

As my oh is disabled ( on oxygen ) there are things which he cant do, walking is fine long as there are no steps or a incline.

By night time he is tired, so we stop in, mainly because every night he has to go on a concentrator for 15 hours, having oxygen pumped into his body, so the tv for him is his bit of pleasure.

Hi Val.

Last year the Tour de France rolled into Aubenas, for stage 19 of the race, we spent all day there as it was close to our site, when we got back to the tent at around 19:00Hrs we which watched it on CH4, and got to see more than we did live!, of course I set the Sky+ back home to record the event, and we now have transfered that recording onto DVD, a nice momento of our holiday in the Southern Ardeche, albiet a small part of the whole holiday. but the DVD captures more of the area we were at than any home made video or still shots could ever do. although we have satellite tv as part of our kit, one thing that I will never take with me on holiday is the LapTop, I am a slave to that machine through work, and am glad to see the back of it when I go away on holiday, it almost made me cringe seeing the amount of folk on site, sat outside thier tents etc, glued to thier LapTops, enjoying the on site Wi-Fi service, each to thier own I guess but not for me.

Andy.

Andy.

It always puzzles me that when someone asks for advice/info on anything relating to TV there's always the 'leave the TV at home' posts.

If TV in the caravan isn't your thing, why read/reply to the thread ?

I've rarely fail getting a signal using my standard Zone 1 43cm minidish. That includes as far south as the Med. Line of sight (trees) is mainly the issue on French campsites.
