list above are accurate and comprehensive

viz jacket  -  legal and sensible - which do you prefer?  legally knocked over or sensible and seen and avoided by others   -   your choice   nb spain has legal requirement for 1 per person  - I always carry spares - they are inexpensive and take up very little room  -   hopefully you never need to use them

documents for car - take the lot, you never know when they might be needed - if you do need them, they are available if not you have won the game   again sensibility wins the day.  for the sake of a bit of space and organisation at the start of the hol, it is no big deal

insurance - I have know people who never bother with it.  Fine.  But what if is important.  I have been going to France since 1980  -  the vast majority of the time I have not needed to use the insurance, but when I needed it it was invaluable.

I learnt a lesson on my first trip abroad - no you won't need a spare caravan tyre my friend told me after buying the van from him   -   coming back from Luxembourg I had a blow out - fortunately there was a garage round the corner ready to rip me off.  I became sensible after that.

your choice ultimately though.  read the advice and decide

The question isn't what's legal or what's sensible. I was attempting to point out that urban myths are no substitute for what's actually required by law. You're right about the legal requirement for Spain, but the same doesn't apply here in France. And, as I pointed out in my posts, I err on the side of 'sensible', while knowing what the LAW requires here.

If y6ou have an accident the police will want to see all your docs. I know!!

We got hit by an idiot scooter rider in Calais, who roared off when I asked for his "assurance" ( I speak reasonable french). We flagged down a police car who directed us to the police station- where we spent time looking through the rogues gallery! The scooter reg was false!

The first thing the officer asked for was all our docs which he photocopied. We then had to fill in a "declaration" which is a mulilingual form.

The officer was very helpful,he did speak some english but said my french was better!

Bear in mind they are stricter on speeding now.

Just one more thing .. if you're the driver and you wear specs you need to take a spare pair. I believe this is required in France but as my hubby does 99% of the driving and is minus 5 short-sighted we both take our spare glasses with us because it's a very sensible rule.

Oh and one more thing ... remember prescription medicines. I always keep enough for a long weekend in the glove compartment just in case. I don't think the French have got a law for that yet ... but maybe they should

Liz
