Hi,
We live between Grimsby and Sc**thorpe. We have been to France 3 times, twice to the Vendee and once to the Alps.
I thought you may like an idea of ouor travelling times and where it took us to!. We have always used the channel (Hull very expensive and we didn't think it was worth it.....personal choice).
We have done the Dover to Dunkerque, Norfolk Line crossing, leaving home early in the morning and making the noon crossing when we went to the Alps and the 2pm one for the Vendee. We found travelling down on a Sunday best if you have the time, less traffic, especially around the Dartford crossing.
We then tend to drive until about 6-7pm on the other side and then stop in a cheapish overnight hotel, which we pre book online (we did a very cheap one the first year and since have used the Camponille, which have onsite restaurants or a meal!). Going to the Vendee we stopped the other side of Rouen (on 'the cow' roundabout) and to the Alps somewhere in the Champagne region (I can not remember where). We prefer this option, just an overnight bag to take out the car rather than setting up tents. We are only a family of 3 and so only need one hotel room which makes it a reasonable cost.
The following morning we get up and set off about 7.30ish, stopping for breakfast and lunch,(they have great service areas in France) aiming to arrive at the campsite around 2-3pm, which gives plenty of time for stting up and a swim before dusk.
I don't do much of the driving, but we stick to the toll roads as much as possible, quick, quiet and easy to follow.
Hope this helps.
