thank you ever so much people i really appreciate your replies. Naive that i am i never even gave a second thought to possibly robberies, gawd what a horrible thought, i think on reflection the best way to go about this would be to park in the port parking at Calais, when we arrive then driven through the day when we have had a little rest.

thanks David for that advice, and everyone else i am sorry to hear about your bad experiences its a sad thing when you look forward to a holiday all year and it goes pear shaped all through a few greedy unscrupelous people who prey on people who have saved all year for their hol.

I am definately more aware now, and take your good advice very gratefully.

Jane x

we were first timers to france this summer and originally thought Brittany as a good starter place.

The more i looked at the map & the distance from Calais to Brittany & the thought of not guaranteed sunshine , the more my eyes wandered South. It aint alot furthur from Calais to the hot south than it is to Brittany & its dodgy weather.

Depends what you want from a holiday i suppose.I love beautiful scenery , great beaches & hot sunny weather just makes it all the better for me.

Check your map , it is quite a drive to Brittany from Calais

Sorry to be a kill joy, But I live in Italy and through out July/ August the news was full of storys of British holiday Makers, Having their Caravans broken into and having a sleeping gas sprayed.
You wake up unaware into you realise that you have no money or worse no passports left in the van or car.
Most of these attacks happened in service areas in France and Spain and seemed to target soley British number plated cars.
Please take care and find a campsite do not become a stastistic.

Thank for that Bev & John, we are not sure yet where we gonna end up, but i must admit the thought of nice weather is one of the most important things to consider,so it may be that we do end up further south.

Nero thanks for your advice its quite scary really thinking that anything like this could happens to you, will have to rethink i think, problem we have is that we dont really have too much time to sleep before we get to Dover cos we are both working till lunchtine on the Friday, then we got the long trip to The Ferry at least a 6 hour drive, so we shouls more or less arrive just before the sailing, then of course we cant drive too long after arriving in France cos by that time we will have been up more than 18 hours, so as yet we are not sure how to work it,we obviously need sleep before we continue our journey, but where at 4pm in the morning lol. ?????? and to be safe too.

we went right down to the Med near Beziers at a site called Les Berges du Canal , it was perfect , quiet , right next to the canal du midi , 2 miles from a superb beach. It was about 700 miles from Calais but well worth it.

We sailed at 5am , like you a long drive south , we got to Dover about 11pm fri night and slept in the van near the docks for about 4 hours , then drove about 300 miles on the saturday from calais before finding a site for the night.

we planned it well in advance , our route etc so had some idea of sites & what sort of time range we would arrive & it worked very well for us.
