Bumping this a bit because I think it's an interesting and confusing topic. I've recently been booking several sites (part of a tour) and have found (France and Luxembourg) that either (a) sites just take your booking, no deposit required, or (b) you can pay through secure sites by VISA. Obviously, paying by credit card, there is a certain transaction charge but nothing like the amounts charged for money transfer. This has also been my experience in the past. However I've never booked at the honeypots on the French Mediterranean.
So, who are the people asking for cash and why? Are they just the large sites in Provence and the like? Are they just the upper grade camps? How common is it?
