Hi Dave, i hadn't even considered an e-reader! My first reaction was 'i'd never be able to see the screen if sat out in the sun - how do you find the screen in bright light? My laptop struggles even when sat by the patio door with bright conditions and its useless in sunlight! But i do fancy this idea.

Hi Dave
I have seen the e-reader in Waterstones and I was really impressed with the screen as it looked much more like a real book than any laptop. It even came with a cover that made it feel like holding a book. I tried looking on the internet at the time but struggled to find where to get the books from (especially anything free!). Any suggestions for where I should be looking? Also what is the file format for the e-reader?
I'm pretty sure we'll go for two of these if we are sure we can get plenty of titles.
Thanks

You can try this link to free book website but I looked into this with a view to buying an ereader and the free stuff is not my cup of tea. Mostly Classics or obscure self published stuff. If the author is still alive to collect the royalties then you will have to pay for it. A  good investment if you want to spend your gap year reading all those classics you never got round to reading. Otherwise you have to pay for recent stuff and the latest blockbusters

Going slightly off topic, do you read French at all?  If so and you have a year to improve then why not read some French things?  Okay it will be a bit more of a struggle than reading in English, for the first few weeks at least but could solve the problem!

I'm not a great French linguist but I improved enormously (this was many years back) by reading Paris Match every week: improved my French but also kept me up-to-date with French news and views. Similarly we used to buy the lads French versions (i.e. the originals) of Asterix books and they would buy themselves other comic things. French newspapers are okay and the crosswords, generally, are really easy!

Some books will always be a struggle (imagine a French person trying to read Dickens or an ultramodern poet) but a quick scan through the first page will avoid you buying something way beyond your level .....

We buy, and read, the French caravan magazine 'Le Monde de Plein Air' - and 'Le Caravannier'.  It's amazing how much you can understand once it's a subject you're familiar with.  We also buy the Midi Libre (very local newspaper) each morning, to pick up the local gossip!

A bit off topic as it's not much use on the continent but www.readitswapit.co.uk is a good site if you're a voracious reader as you can swap books with other people and just pay the postage.
