FW, She might just have it sorted now as the OP was 2010

You're right! But I wasn't the first to post after 2010. And someone else might search on the same topic.
My knuckles are duly rapped....

2024 = 20 sites / 41 nights. 2023 = 9/23. 2022 = 13/35. 2021 = 11/29. 2020 = 4/20. 2019 = 13/35. 2018 = 20/33. 2017 = 10/22. 2016 = 19/33. 2015 = 15 sites / 27 nights. Didn't count 1976 to 2014.

Billy's Mum - make sure you get the right size muzzle (get it fitted), make sure it's a style which allows him to pant if it's hot. But most important, you'll have to get him used to wearing it before you go - you mustn't expect him to like it & take to wearing it for an hour the first time you have to put it on (if you have to do).
We had to get one for our dog, for visits to the vet (amputated tail); she tore off the muzzle that was one size too big & we had to build up the time she'd wear it without freaking out from seconds to minutes; it took a lot of patience.

This was a great post, Fiona, and whilst the OP might have sorted things out since 2010, Merk, the new poster in 2017, obviously was looking for help with a similar question, so your reply was just right.

I can't help feeling, that taking dogs somewhere hot where they've got to wear a muzzle in public places, can't be that good for them, (especially if not used to them) and my personal choice would be to go somewhere where dogs are more welcome, and can be walked in public without a muzzle.

Having had my son's dog with us in France for a fortnight, we saw just how much he enjoyed being welcomed with his own water bowl outside cafes, and was able to go out and about in public without any worries. It would have been terrible if he'd had to wear a muzzle and I'm sure he would have been absolutely miserable.

How strict are they. We have always gone to France with our dogs and never had trouble. Although they are allowed on the beach they were not supposed to go in the sea but many people let their dogs in ours included! This about muzzles in Italy is putting us off going!! Anyone kmow of any friendly sites in Lake Garda?

We haven't been to Lake Garda recently, or with a dog, but earlier in this thread, in reply to the original poster, Saxo has posted the following: In Italy it is mandatory to use a muzzle for dogs that walk on the streets or any open space without a leash, and a muzzle and a leash for dogs in public places and public transportation.
Saxo1.

Someone who has been with their dog may tell you how strictly this is applied, but from personal experience we had, we didn't like our 'discussion' with Italian police, and I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of them by not muzzling my dog.

The law has been amended now to effect that you must have a muzzle with you but you don't have to fit it unless the dog shows aggression toward other animals or people or the authorities tell you to fit it.
It is required on some public transport or other public places which are normally signed.
The lead must not be more than 1.5m extendable leads are not allowed.
As in France the locals tend to ignore the rules/laws but as a visitor I wouldn't recommend it!

Lake Garda - it depends on what you like t do but we chose the north west end of the lake - Limone....beautiful. The campsite was the NANZEL. Camping Park Garda is AWFUL.

Dogs - its busy in the town between 10am and 7pm, so best go before and after these times. Liek France, Italy is dog friendly. NANZEL definitly dog friendly and they can swim in the lake. We had a Great Dane next to us!!!

We drove down through Germany, then back up into Austria via the Brenner Pass...beautiful!!

Since when do Itailians follow the rules, we have been to Italy 6 times and have never seen a dog wearing a muzzle, ever. So I wouldn't waste the cash. And lake Garda is a excellent spot. Check out camping Fossalata

We've just got back from our holiday in Europe and one place we stayed at was at Campeggio da Giovanni in Peschiera Del Garda. It's on the owners own vineyard and has good facilities and a lovely outdoor swimming pool. It's a bit of a walk to the lake, maybe 20 minutes.

We did not put a muzzle on our German Shepherd dog at all, but there were signs by the lake stating muzzles must be worn, although I presumed they were only if you were walking along the lakeside.

We ve been to Lake Garda with our 2 dogs   bought nylon muzzles never had to use them once! In fact people looked at our dogs and assumed they were vicious because we had halti 's on as they pull on the leads. But we never had a problem at all. They were allowed everywhere with us even in restaurants. Italians are very dog friendly.
